San Jose Earthquakes News Release
The San Jose Earthquakes continue their push for the Supporter's Shield and the number one seed in the MLS Cup playoffs this Saturday, August 31 against D.C. United at RFK Stadium. The match starts at 4:30 p.m. PT, and will be broadcast on same day tape delay at 6:30 p.m. PT on Fox Sports Net. The Quakes and United played to a 2-2 tie on August 17 at Spartan Stadium in their only meeting this season.
Last Match Colorado Rapids 3, Earthquakes 0; Saturday, August 24, 2002; Invesco Field at Mile High; Denver, CO
The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 3-0 decision to the Colorado Rapids Aug. 24 at Invesco Field at Mile High. The Quakes allowed an early goal, and could not take advantage of their chances, before allowing two late goals to lose to the Rapids on the road for the second time this season. Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon received a red card in the final minute and he will not be available for the Quakes next match on Saturday, August 31 against D.C. United. Just like the first meeting between the Earthquakes and Rapids this season, the Rapids jumped on the board first. Chris Carrieri got behind the defense on a long ball from Carlos Valderrama and one-timed a left-footed shot that snuck by Cannon at the near post. Early in the second half, Ramiro Corrales started a counterattack that nearly resulted in the tying goal. After intercepting a pass Corrales sent a ball behind the defense to Donovan, who one-timed a shot to the far post that went wide. Moments later, Graziani received a through ball from Donovan and outmaneuvered a defender and blasted a left-footed shot that slammed off the post. The Rapids scored their second goal in the 67th minute off a corner kick. Chung sent the corner kick to the penalty spot, where Zach Kingsley flicked a header to the back post for a 2-0 lead. Late in the match, second half substitute Seth Trembly got in alone on Cannon after receiving a long pass. Trembly dribbled around Cannon and as the ball headed towards the endline, Cannon slightly clipped Trembly in the ankle. Cannon received a red card and the Rapids were awarded a penalty kick. Chung blasted the penalty kick into the lower corner for the final goal of the match.
Last Match vs. D.C.
Earthquakes 2; D.C. United 2; Saturday, August 17, 2002 Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes used a two-goal outburst from midfielder Ronnie Ekelund to tie D.C. United 2-2 in an entertaining match before 11,177 at Spartan Stadium. San Jose had two prime chances to win the game in overtime, but Manny Lagos' header in the 95th minute bounced off the crossbar and Landon Donovan's shot from 18-yards out in the 100th minute was barely knocked away by D.C. goalkeeper Nick Rimando. United started the scoring in the fifth minute, finding the back of the net for the first time in 536 minutes when Eliseo Quintanilla slipped behind the San Jose defense off a free kick. Marco Etcheverry's cross found Eddie Pope in the corner of the 18-yard box, and he headed the ball directly to an open Quintanilla, who touched the ball past Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon from close range for the 1-0 lead. The Earthquakes struck back twelve minutes later when Ekelund converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute, sending a clinical shot to the left corner past a diving Rimando. Following a quick re-start on a free kick, midfielder Ramiro Corrales controlled the ball in heavy traffic near the top of the D.C. penalty box. The ball came loose, but as Earthquakes forward Dwayne De Rosario attempted to collect it for a shot he was brought down by Ben Olsen, setting up Ekelund's goal. D.C. briefly took the lead once again in the 61st minute on Quintanilla's second goal of the game. The Salvadoran forward took a pass from Pope to the right of the Earthquakes net and fired a shot on goal through a tangle of San Jose defenders. The shot was deflected, but bounced right back to Quintanilla, who fired another rocket that bounced off a hustling Ian Russell and past Cannon for the 2-1 lead. The Earthquakes would only trail for two minutes however, as Ekelund notched his second goal of the match with a marvelous strike from 25 yards out on a free kick. A foul on De Rosario set up the penalty, and Ekelund blasted a shot off the left post and into the net to tie the match at 2-2, giving him his first multi-goal game in an Earthquakes uniform.

Adjusting and Readjusting
The Earthquakes have forged the best record in MLS despite the luxury of being able to play with a consistent starting lineup. San Jose has missed a total of 76 man-games to injury, National Team duty or suspension in 2002, resulting in 16 different starting lineups through 24 games. Head coach Frank Yallop has used the same starting lineup back-to-back only eight times this season, as the team has seen nine different players miss a total of 52 games due to injury.

Still Stellar At Spartan
The Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak at Spartan Stadium to 14 games, one shy of the all-time MLS record with a 3-1 win Wednesday over Dallas. The Earthquakes share the record with the Chicago Fire. During the 14-game unbeaten streak, which dates back to August 25, 2001, the team has outscored opponents 37-10. Since head coach Frank Yallop took over the Earthquakes prior to the 2001 season, San Jose is 22-3-4 at Spartan including regular season MLS games, playoff matches, F.C. Champions Cup play and U.S. Open Cup matches.
Three-Year Unbeaten Streak
It has been over three years since San Jose last lost a game against D.C. United. United defeated the Earthquakes on June 3, 1998, but since then San Jose is 5-0-2. The Quakes won with two shootout wins in 1999 and tied 2-2 and won 1-0 in 2000. The Earthquakes swept the series last year, winning 3-2 and 4-0. The 2-2 tie on Saturday extended that streak.
Quakes Keep Rolling
The Earthquakes have already tied last year's win total of 13 with their 3-1 win on Wednesday, August 21 over Dallas. San Jose is just one win away (three points) from tying last year's club-record point total (45).
