The San Jose Earthquakes hit the road this week to take on the LA Galaxy on Friday, Aug. 8 at the StubHub Center. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on NBC Sports, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

The Earthquakes opened the Levi's(r) Stadium in winning fashion, topping Western Conference leading Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 thanks to a goal from Portuguese forward Yannick Djalo. Playing in front of 48,765 fans in the inaugural event at the state-of-the-art venue, the Earthquakes posted their fourth shutout of the season and earned the victory thanks to link play from forwards Djalo and Chris Wondolowski. Wondolowski slipped a through ball into open space past Seattle's back line in the 42nd minute, springing his fleet-footed teammate for his second goal in as many games. Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch posted nine saves to earn the win. The save total matched his career high in a San Jose uniform, a mark he initially set on July 23, 2011 in a 4-0 loss against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium with his team playing a man down.

After a scoreless first half, the Earthquakes conceded a goal midway through the second half and fell 1-0 to the LA Galaxy in front of a sold-out crowd of 50,006 at Stanford Stadium. In the first half, the Quakes Steven Lenhart came close on a couple of headers that nearly put San Jose in the lead. On the first, he got on the end of a header from close range but just pushed it past the post. Late in the half, Jason Hernandez picked up a poor clearance and volleyed a high cross in for Lenhart. The Quakes forward out-jumped his defender, but his header just missed the left post. The Galaxy took the lead in the 61st minute on a goal from Gyasi Zardes. Robbie Keane curled a ball in from 25 yards out to Marcelo Sarvas in the heart of the penalty box. Sarvas calmly laid the ball off to Zardes, who powered home a right-footed shot past Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch. With time running down, Lenhart almost equalized with another powerful header. A long cross from the right wing found Lenhart in the box and he headed a ball back across the Galaxy goal, but LA goalkeeper Jaime Penedo leaped and tipped the ball over the bar.

History of the Earthquakes - LA Galaxy Rivalry

As the two original MLS teams in California, the Earthquakes (then known as the Clash) and the Galaxy met for the first time on April 28, 1996, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. ... In front of a crowd of 40,347, the Clash fell to the Galaxy, 2-1 ... From 1996-2005, the in-state rivals matched up more than any other teams in the league ... Along with playing each other 48 times in the regular season, the Quakes and the Galaxy have also faced off eight times in the postseason and four times in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup ... The teams squared off in the playoffs in 1996, 2003 and 2005, as well as the 2001 MLS Cup ... The Galaxy captured the 1996 conference semifinal series, two games to one, taking the final two contests at the Rose Bowl by identical scores of 2-0 ... In 2001, the sides met in the MLS Cup, with the Quakes producing a come-from-behind 2-1 triumph at Columbus Crew Stadium as Dwayne De Rosario scored the winner in overtime ... MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Earthquakes Break In Levi's(r) Stadium

The Earthquakes made history over the weekend, playing the inaugural game at the San Francisco 49ers' new home, Levi's(r) Stadium. The Earthquakes drew 48,765 fans and won 1-0 against Seattle Sounders FC. San Jose put itself in the record books with the first event, the first soccer goal scored and the first victory at the state-of-the-art venue.

Djalo Heating Up

Portuguese forward Yannick Djalo scored his second goal in as many games to lead the Earthquakes to a 1-0 win against Seattle over the weekend. Djalo took a pass from Chris Wondolowski and slotted it past an on-rushing Sounders FC goalkeeper to pick up his third career MLS goal. He won MLS Player of the Week honors last week after posting a goal and two assists in a 5-1 rout of Chicago on July 23.

Wondolowski's Perfect Pass

Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski is known for his goal-scoring abilities, but it was his passing that raised eyebrows over the weekend. Wondolowsi slotted a perfect pass to Yannick Djalo for the game-winning goal against Seattle and created several other chances. The assist was Wondolowski's second of the season, both of which have come over San Jose's last two games.

Lenahrt to Miss 4-6 Weeks After Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart underwent successful surgery on his right knee on Friday, Aug. 1. The arthroscopic surgery was performed at Stanford Hospital & Clinics by Dr. Zack Vaughn. Lenhart is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Lenhart has appeared in 10 games this season and scored his first goal of the season against the New York Red Bulls on July 19. He also scored the Quakes lone goal in their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against Seattle Sounders FC on June 24. He has scored 20 goals in his career with the Earthquakes.

Perez Garcia Signs as Third Designated Player in Club History

The Earthquakes announced the signing of Argentine midfielder Matias Perez Garcia last week as the club's third-ever Designated Player. Perez Garcia, 29, is a creative playmaker who has spent his career in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and France. Most recently, he completed two seasons with CA Tigre of Argentina, leading Los Matadores in scoring both years. The Tartagal, Argentina native had 16 goals and 10 assists in 77 appearances with CA Tigre after joining the club in 2012. He helped lead Los Matadores to the Round of 16 in the 2012-13 Copa Libertadores, scoring four goals in his nine tournament appearances. Perez Garcia followed with a dynamic campaign in the first half of the 2013-14 Argentinean competitive calendar, the Torneo Inicial, with four goals and five assists in 13 games. He found the net three more times in the Torneo Final, which ended in May.
