The San Jose Earthquakes (11-4-4, 37 pts.) will host Real Salt Lake (11-6-3, 36 pts.) in a battle of Western Conference and Supporters' Shield leaders on Saturday, July 14 at Buck Shaw Stadium, presented by A&W Root Beer. Real Salt Lake (11-6-3, 36 pts.) comes to Buck Shaw Stadium just a point behind San Jose for the top position in the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield standings. Costa Rican forward Alvaro Saborio leads a potent RSL attack with 10 goals. In RSL's last game on July 7 against the Portland Timbers, Saborio scored his first MLS hat trick. Fellow forward Fabian Espindola supports Saborio in the attack, and has added six goals and three assists. Javier Morales and Kyle Beckerman control RSL's midfield, each dishing out four assists and Beckerman adding four goals.
History of the Quakes-Real Salt Lake Rivalry
Real Salt Lake joined MLS as an expansion side prior to the 2005 campaign ... The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in their first-ever meeting on April 30, 2005, at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, with Alejandro Moreno providing a late equalizer for San Jose ... After going 2-0-2 over their first four MLS regular-season meetings, the Quakes dropped their first league tilt to RSL, 3-1, on May 31, 2008, at Rice-Eccles ... The Quakes suffered two straight home defeats in league play in shutout fashion in back-to-back season openers in 2010 (3-0) and 2011 (1-0) ... On March 19 the Quakes and RSL kicked off the 2011 season at Buck Shaw Stadium in a match later dubbed The Great Deluge as RSL took a 1-0 decision in a driving rainstorm through a 64th-minute Kyle Beckerman strike from 25 yards out that glanced off the left post and went in ... Until the first meeting this season between the Quakes and Real Salt Lake on April 21 when he scored in the 93rd minute, RSL was one of just four clubs among the 19 in MLS in 2012 that Chris Wondolowski had not scored a goal against in a regular-season MLS match, with the others being Houston, Portland and newcomer Montreal, whom he has yet to face ... Wondolowski now leads the Quakes with two goals against RSL ... Steven Lenhart had one goal and one assist against RSL in 2009 while with the Columbus Crew ... Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski and RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando have played together twice for the U.S. Men's National Team, most recently featuring in head coach Jurgen Klinsmann's starting lineup earlier this year on Jan. 25 for a 1-0 win over Panama in Panama City ... Celebrities to Scoop for Charity at A&W Root Beer Float Night
The Earthquakes will host their second annual A&W Root Beer Float night featuring local celebrity scoopers prior to kickoff on Saturday, July 14 when the club hosts Real Salt Lake. Fans can enjoy a frothy root beer float from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Epicenter Fan Zone for donations starting at $3. Celebrity scoopers include: Former U.S. Women's National Team player Brandi Chastain, hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut, former Strikeforce World Lightweight champion Josh Thomson and former Earthquakes players Chris Leitch and Chris Dangerfield. All proceeds will benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Wondolowski, Beitashout Selected to MLS AT&T All-Star Game First XI
Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski and defender Steven Beitashour were among 11 players named to the MLS All-Star team on Sunday. The duo is available for selection to suit up on Wednesday, July 25 when MLS hosts defending European Champion Chelsea at PPL Park (5:30 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TeleFutura). For Wondolowski, the selection is the second in his career while Beitashour received his first career All-Star nod.
Return to Buck Shaw Stadium
The Earthquakes will play their first match at Buck Shaw Stadium since May 19 when Real Salt Lake visits on Saturday. The club has played four home matches - three in U.S. Open Cup competitions - in that time. The slate included two trips to Stanford's Cagan Stadium, a U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco and a sold-out California Clasico at Stanford Stadium.
Quakes First in the Western Conference, Supporters' Shield Standings
The Earthquakes (11-4-4, 37 pts.) held their position atop the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield standings with a scoreless draw at FC Dallas on July 7. San Jose is one point clear of Real Salt Lake (11-6-3, 36 pts.) with a game in hand.
Busch, Earthquakes Defense Notch Fourth Shutout of 2012
Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch recorded his fourth shutout of the season and first since March 31 in San Jose's 0-0 draw against FC Dallas on Saturday. Busch is tied for No. 6 all-time in MLS history with 64 career shutouts during his 12 seasons in the league.
Quakes Among MLS Category Leaders
Through 19 games, the Earthquakes are No. 1 in MLS with 36 goals scored and 38 assists. With 24 scores conceded, the Quakes are also tied with D.C. United for No. 1 in the league with a +12 goal differential.
Race for the Budweiser Golden Boot
Chris Wondolowski continues to pace the pack in the Budweiser Golden Boot race after scoring No. 14 of the season on June 30 against the LA Galaxy. New York Red Bulls striker Kenny Cooper is next with 11, followed by teammate Thierry Henry, D.C. United's Chris Pontius and Houston's Will Bruin with nine apiece.
Quakes Surpass Approaching Points Total from 2011 Season
Midway through the 2012 season, the Earthquakes are one point away from matching their previous season haul. In 2011, San Jose finished 8-12-14 with 38 points. The club is currently 11-4-4 with 37 points and has already surpassed their 2011 win total with a 2-1 result against the Colorado Rapids on June 20 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Wine & Dine with the Earthquakes Set for Sept. 9 at Guglielmo Winery
The club will host its Wine and Dine with the Earthquakes wine tasting and fundraising event on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Guglielmo Winery in Morgan Hill. The event includes wine tasting, VIP catering and the opportunity to mingle with Earthquakes players, coaches and front office members. Tickets to the event are available to all Earthquakes fans starting at www.sjearthquakes.com /wine . Tickets for this exclusive event are $100 per person or a table of eight for $800. You can also purchase one of five VIP tables for eight guests for $1,200 and have Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart, Jon Busch, Alan Gordon or Frank Yallop as the guest at your table. Guests must be 21 years of age or older in order to attend. No one under the age of 21 will be admitted. All proceeds will benefit the Earthquakes Community Fund.
Earthquakes Set to Host Swansea City on July 31
The San Jose Earthquakes have announced their 2012 international friendly, with Welsh side Swansea City of the English Premier League coming to Buck Shaw Stadium on Tuesday, July 31, for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off. Individual tickets for the match are on sale now, and can be purchased by visiting sjearthquakes.com or by calling Tickets.com at (800) 225-2277. Season ticket holders should use their Bonus Game "A" ticket for the contest. Swansea City, founded in 1912, is the first Welsh club to reach the Premiership since the league was formed. The Swans, who have lifted the Welsh Cup 10 times, went 12-15-11 this season, beating Liverpool on the last day of an impressive debut Premier League campaign to place 11th in the table.
Wells Fargo Goals for Education
Wells Fargo has again pledged to donate $250 for each goal the Earthquakes score in 2012 through the Goals for Education program. With 36 goals through 19 games, the donated total for this season already stands at $9,000. Thanks to 40 goals in 2011, the partnership raised $10,000 for local youth soccer and athletic development programs a year ago.
