The San Jose Earthquakes departed for Los Angeles on Sunday, March 1 after their 2-0 win at home over the Colorado Rapids on Friday night. The Quakes will play two preseason matches against Major League Soccer in Southern California before they head back to the Bay Area on Friday, March, 6.

Quakes Fall to Colorado Rapids 2-1

The Earthquakes dropped their first game of the preseason earlier today in Los Angles to the Colorado Rapids 2-1. Quincy Amarikwa scored the lone goal for the Quakes and Conor Casey and Jordan Harvey scored for the Rapids. The Quakes starting lineup did not change from Friday, but Nick Garcia and Amarikwa came on in the second half, both returning from injury. The Earthquakes will play their next exhibition match on Wednesday, March 4 against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center.

Earthquakes Head Coach Frank Yallop to Appear on Fox Football Fone-In Tonight

San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop will join Fox Football Fone-In co-hosts Nick Webster and Steven Cohen as the featured guest on tonight's installment of Fox Soccer Channel's weekly two-hour call-in show, airing live at 5:00 p.m. PT. Yallop will appear live in-studio to field calls from viewers and discuss his team's preparations for the upcoming Major League Soccer season during Fox Football Fone-In, which airs every Monday from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. PT.

Quakes Pick up Chris Leitch

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they have acquired defender Chris Leitch from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for allocation money and an international slot. For his seven-year career, the University of North Carolina product has logged 10,875 minutes in 138 regular season games, and 719 minutes in his nine playoff appearances. He has notched six assists in his career. Leitch, who was originally drafted by the Columbus Crew in 2002, made 17 appearances with the MLS Cup runner-up New York Red Bulls in 2008. He started 14 of those regular season matches, notching a pair of assists in his 1,259 minutes of play. Leitch, who lines up primarily at right back, also started all four playoff games for Red Bulls to help them reach their first MLS Cup Final in team history.

Quakes Waive Two

The Earthquakes placed two players on waivers today, forward John Cunliffe and midfielder Michael Ghebru. Cunliffe appeared in 12 games for San Jose last season, playing mostly as a forward. He scored two goals for the Quakes. He was acquired in a trade just prior to the 2008 season from Chivas USA. Ghebru signed with the Quakes last September and appeared in five reserve division matches.

Quakes Knock off Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw

The Earthquakes won their fourth consecutive preseason game on Friday, Feb. 27 with a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids. Cam Weaver scored the first goal on an assist from Ryan Johnson, while Jamil Roberts closed out the scoring, heading in a free kick served by Arturo Alvarez. Joe Cannon and his defense protected the Quakes lead with the shutout.

Cam Weaver Scores in Second Straight Game

Newly acquired forward Cam Weaver scored for the second straight game, against Colorado on Friday, Feb. 27, after scoring the fifth goal in the 6-0 victory over the Fuego on Feb. 20. Weaver's goal versus Colorado came in the eighth minute off of a cross by his partner up top, Ryan Johnson. The Earthquakes signed Weaver in mid-February after his time abroad playing for FK Haugesund of Norway.

Quakes Announce New Marketing Campaign

The San Jose Earthquakes announced their new, exciting marketing campaign for the 2009 season last week. The in-house campaign prominently features star midfielder Darren Huckerby, local product Joe Cannon and the up-and-coming midfielder Shea Salinas along with members of the entire team across a number of different media and outdoor advertising. The campaign will feature four different television spots, highlighting the personalities of the team. The first spot chronicles English midfielder Darren Huckerby's journey from stardom at Norwich City in England to a starring role for the Earthquakes. The commercial, titled "What's a Huckerby?" highlights his unmatched loyalty to both Norwich City and the San Jose Earthquakes. The second and third commercial spots will feature Bay-Area star Joe Cannon in "What's a Cannon?" and Shea Salinas in "Where's Salinas?" A fourth spot will debut later in the season, featuring an eclectic mix of players that defines who the Earthquakes are, a diverse team composed of players from around the world. The outdoor component will feature billboards, banners, and bus advertising with those players and their slogans.

Earthquakes Announce Partnership with KNBR 680/1050

The partnership will feature regular advertisements on both KNBR 680 and 1050, along with an increased presence on station programming. Every Friday on KNBR 1050, a five-minute Earthquakes report will air immediately following the "Razor and Mr. T" show, which airs from 3-7 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Earthquakes and KNBR will also work together on a number of giveaways and promotions during the season, while the Quakes presence on the KNBR website will be significantly enhanced.

Quakes Set to Kick-Off Street Team

At the grassroots level, 2009 will see the debut of the Earthquakes/Amway Global Street Team. This group will appear at numerous festivals and events throughout Northern California to help increase visibility for both the Earthquakes and Amway Global brand. In the past, the Earthquakes have had a presence at Cinco de Mayo in San Jose, Carnaval in San Francisco and numerous youth soccer tournaments, among other events. Amway Global partnered with the Earthquakes to be the team's jersey sponsor beginning in 2009. The street team will appear at the U.S. Youth Soccer Workshop this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose. On Saturday, Earthquakes assistant coach Ian Russell, along with midfielder Arturo Alvarez and defender Jamil Roberts will perform a soccer clinic from 3-4 p.m. PT at the workshop.

Preseason Schedule

The San Jose Earthquakes have played five of their eight scheduled preseason matches so far, earning wins over Seattle Sounders FC, the Houston Dynamo, Fresno Fuego and Colorado Rapids. Ryan Johnson leads the team in goals in preseason with five in five matches. Below is the team's full preseason schedule:

Feb. 13 - Earthquakes def. Seattle Sounders 3-2 at MLS Central Coast Showcase in San Luis Obispo (Johnson - 2, Amarikwa).

Feb. 15 - Earthquakes def. Houston Dynamo 2-0 at MLS Central Coast Showcase in San Luis Obispo (Johnson, Weaver).

Feb. 20 - Earthquakes def. Fresno Fuego 6-0 at Chukchansi Park in Fresno. (Johnson, Huckerby, Alvarez

Feb. 27 - Earthquakes def. Colorado Rapids 2-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium (Weaver, Roberts).

March 4 - Earthquakes vs. Chivas USA at 10:30 a.m. at The Home Depot Center.

March 11 - Earthquakes vs. Cal at 2:00 p.m. in Berkeley.

Season tickets are on sale now for the 2009 Earthquakes season. The season-ticket package consists of 17 games, 15 regular season matches and two bonus matches.
