Earthquakes 2, Kansas City Wizards 3; October 18; Community America Ballpark; Kansas City, KC
The San Jose Earthquakes fell 3-2 to the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night at Community America Ballpark. Scott Sealy and Shea Salinas scored for the Earthquakes. However, Herculez Gomez scored in stoppage time to give the Wizards the victory. At the start of the game, San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon was tested quickly and came up big in the fourth minute. Claudio Lopez pounced on a misplay by the Earthquakes defense and charged toward the goal, but Cannon came off his line to stop a rampaging Lopez. Lopez got the goal he was denied earlier by Cannon in the 18th minute. Thompson connected with Lopez on a give-and-go, flighting a cross into the 6-yard box. Lopez volleyed the pass, extending his right leg to loop the ball past Cannon into the corner of the net. The Earthquakes bounced back quicker than an aftershock as Sealy and midfielder Arturo Alvarez combined for a goal. Alvarez crossed the ball from the right touchline, finding Sealy in front of goal, and his header was his second goal on the season with his new team. Sealy was playing his against his former team, acquired by the Earthquakes on July 11. The Wizards put together a textbook goal seven minutes later. Defender Jack Jewsbury played the ball in and Lopez flicked the ball with his left heel. Arnaud was led perfectly and he pushed the ball past Cannon into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season. The Wizards had controlled the opening 45 minutes, with 10 shots in all and six on target, bringing four saves out of Cannon. Then in the 60th minute, the Wizards had their best chance off a counterattack when substitute Ivan Trujillo danced in the penalty box before unloading a shot that forced Cannon to dive left to make the save. But at the halfway point of the second half, the Earthquakes started to come back into the game, and soon pulled even. The Wizards failed to clear the ball in the 71st, and it cost them. K.C. goalkeeper Kevin Hartman was unable to collect a cross and went to the ground. Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad failed to clear the ball, and the Quakes took advantage. Salinas hammered a shot dead center on goal, the ball flew high inside the top netting and the Earthquakes had pulled level. Feeling like they needed to win in their final home game, the Wizards pressed for the winner. Lopez headed a ball just over the goal on a pass from Gomez in the 81st minute. A Gomez direct free kick in the 85th minute flew right into the sure hands of Cannon, and then in the 90th minute, Lopez ran onto a ball on the left wing and fired to the left of Cannon, but he stuck out his left glove to knock the ball away. Then Lopez took a last-gasp corner with the three minutes of stoppage time nearly gone. His dipping cross was met by a running Gomez who bulged the net with a left-footed touch past Cannon to give the Wizards the victory.
Last Match vs. Toronto FC
Earthquakes 0, Toronto FC 0; July 19, 2008; BMO Field; TORONTO, Ontario
The San Jose Earthquakes earned a gritty road draw 0-0 against Toronto FC at BMO Field Saturday afternoon. San Jose newcomers Francisco Lima, Scott Sealy and Darren Huckerby all made their debuts in the Starting XI after signing with the club earlier in the week. Also in the lineup was defender Ryan Cochrane, making his first league appearance since June 22 due to an ankle injury. The Earthquakes' best early chance came on a direct free kick in the 18th minute. Huckerby's initial kick was blocked by a sliding Ibrahim, who was booked for moving too early and delaying the restart. San Jose then tried a bit of trickery as Ronnie O'Brien lined up to take the kick, but then jogged aside as Lima struck the ball. Lima's shot, his first as an Earthquake, went high over the net. In the 34th minute, Marvell Wynne tried an angled shot from the right side. Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon knocked Wynne's ball away and the effort left Cannon flat on his stomach. The rebound went directly to Amado Guevara, but the forward's chance at the wide-open left side of the net sailed over the crossbar. TFC winger Rohan Ricketts was carrying the ball with Ibrahim trailing for a pass when Cannon gathered the ball in a hard slide that sent Ricketts sprawling, and left Cannon laying on the ground after initially standing to throw the ball downfield. After a few moments of attention from the club trainer, however, Cannon was able to continue. The attacking drought continued as both teams combined for just one shot in the first 23 minutes of the half. The Reds largely held the ball on San Jose's side of the field, but couldn't turn their time of possession into a solid scoring chance. In the 68th minute, TFC was awarded a penalty kick after Ibrahim was fouled in the penalty area by San Jose defender James Riley. The Earthquakes bitterly protested the call, but to no avail as the Reds had their best opportunity of the match. Set piece specialist Guevara took the shot for TFC, but Cannon guessed right and blocked the shot on the left side of the net.
