MLS Cup Playoff Race Update
Kansas City enters the final weekend of the MLS regular season fully in control of its own destiny in the 2008 MLS Cup Playoff race. The Wizards currently hold the first "wildcard" spot in the playoff picture and would occupy the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference bracket if the season ended today. A win Saturday guarantees Kansas City the 4th seed in the East. The Wizards can still make the playoffs with a loss or a tie and help from other results. Kansas City could know as early as Thursday if they have clinched a spot in the playoffs, as a New York loss guarantees qualification for the Wizards. If the Wizards qualify as the second "wildcard" team, they will move to the Western Conference bracket as the 4th seed.

Kansas City Wizards Forward Claudio Lopez Named MLS Player of the Week
Kansas City Wizards striker Claudio Lopez was named MLS Player of the Week Monday for a masterful performance Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. Lopez, Kansas City's first-year Designated Player, factored in all three Wizards goals during a vital 3-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The award marks his first career MLS Player of the Week honor. After the riveting last-second victory, Kansas City controls its playoff fate heading into the regular-season finale this Saturday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. CT on the road against the New England Revolution.
"It means a lot to win MLS Player of the Week because that means our team won," Lopez said. "It was a very exciting game, and we needed to win to help make the playoffs. Our fans were great and very loud, and after the final goal we all celebrated together."
The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
Zavagnin Honored Saturday
Last Saturday, long-time Wizards central midfielder Kerry Zavagnin was honored with a special presentation before the match. The Wizards flew his mother and sister to Kansas City for the presentation to the surprise of Zavagnin, and he was presented with a framed jersey commemorating his service to the organization. The Wizards played a two-minute video montage on the scoreboard to honor Zavagnin. The Cauldron also unfurled several banners, including a 30 X 30 banner that featured the words "Thank You Kerry" above a painted likeness of the player.
Zavagnin has been a vital member of the organization since joining the team in 2000. He started in both of the club's major championships, the 2000 MLS Cup and the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Zavagnin currently holds the records for regular-season games played (236) and minutes played (20,507) in a Kansas City uniform. In 2001, the Wizards named Zavagnin their team Defender of the Year. Zavagnin was then named to the MLS Best XI in 2004 and was an MLS All-Star that season. He also appeared 21 times for the U.S. National Team from 2000-2006 (15 starts) and recorded one assist.
Zavagnin broke into MLS in 1997 with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played for two seasons. Overall, Zavagnin has appeared in 275 MLS matches and played 22,350 minutes. In August, he announced his plans to retire at the end of the season.
