Earthquakes Weekly Update: October 25, 2021

San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes played two matches at PayPal Park last week, defeating Austin FC 4-0 on Wednesday before tying Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-1 on Saturday. Major League Soccer's all-time leading scorer Chris Wondolowski extended his league record to 169 goals on Wednesday, while 21-year-old forward Benji Kikanovic scored one goal in both games.

The Earthquakes are now preparing for two road matches this week, first traveling to Oregon to face the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, Oct. 27, before heading to Utah to play Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Wednesday's match will kick off from Providence Park at 7 p.m. PT and will be televised on NBC Sports California. Saturday's game will kick off from Rio Tinto Stadium at 12:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on Univision, TUDN, and Twitter (English audio). Both matches will also air via radio on KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

LAST GAME VS. AUSTIN FC (10/20)

Teamwork

Chofis, Fierro, Kikanovic and Wondolowski each scored against Austin, recording their first multi-goal shutout victory since Sept. 29. San Jose's last victory by a margin of 4+ goals was vs. LA Galaxy (4-0) on Oct. 14, 2020.

Ever Dozen

After scoring the game-winning goal vs. Austin on Wednesday, Chofis tallies 12 goals and 4 assists in his first year in MLS. His 12 goals also ranks him tied for first in first-year players in MLS (Arango, LAFC).

Helping the Cause

Jeremy Ebobisse and Cristian Espinoza each tallied assists on Wednesday.

Wondo-ful Milestone

Forward Chris Wondolowski scored his third goal of the season and 169th of his MLS career. Along with two postseason goals, he now has 171 combined regular season and playoff goals, surpassing Landon Donovan (170) for most all-time.

Security in Goal

Wednesday's shutout marked JT Marcinkowski's fifth shutout in 2021 and 10th of his MLS career. His five shutouts are a single-season career-high.

San Jose extended their unbeaten home streak against Vancouver to three, holding a 5-1-8 record at home.

Attacking Threat

Forward Benji Kikanovic scored his fourth goal of the season and of his MLS career. He has now scored one goal in each of the last two matches and three goals in his last six appearances.

Helping Hands

Midfielders Cristian Espinoza and Eric Remedi each tallied an assist on Kikanovic's goal. Espinoza's 30th career assist sees him move past Landon Donovan and Eric Wynalda and into sole possession of eighth place in Quakes history.

Record vs. Portland

The Earthquakes hold a 5-14-9 all-time record against the Portland Timbers.

At Providence Park

The Quakes are in search of their first-ever win at Providence Park, holding a 0-10-4 record when facing Portland on the road. San Jose's last victory against Portland was in 2019 in a 3-0 victory at PayPal Park on April 6.

League Leader

Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski has 11 career goals vs. Portland, most among all players in MLS history.

Final Round

Wednesday's match will mark the third and final meeting between the two clubs this season. The Quakes fell to the Timbers 2-0 on May 15 at PayPal Park, before earning a 1-1 road draw on Aug. 4 at Providence Park.

Back in Rose City

Earthquakes forward Jeremy Ebobisse will make his first trip to Providence Park since being traded to San Jose earlier this year.

Absent Players

Marcos Lopez and Nathan are eligible to play on Wednesday after serving one-match suspensions on Saturday.

NEXT GAME VS. REAL SALT LAKE (10/30)

Mayhem in 2021

San Jose earned a 2-1 victory on May 7 at Rio Tinto Stadium with a brace from Chris Wondolowski. The Quakes would later fall to the Utah side 4-3 on Sept. 15 at PayPal Park.

Hat Trick Hero

Chofis scored his first career hat-trick, including an Olimpico, in the Quakes' last match against the Utah side at PayPal Park on Sept. 15.

Below the Line

RSL and San Jose are currently two of the top-three teams below the playoff line. RSL is currently two points below while San Jose is seven.

Strong at Home

Real Salt Lake have only been defeated twice at Rio Tinto Stadium in 2021, yielding a record of 9-2-4 at home this season. One of the two defeats came against the Quakes on May 7.
