San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes defeated D.C. United 4-1 at PayPal Park on Saturday night, marking their second consecutive multi-goal victory. The Quakes currently sit in second place (2-1-0; 6 pts.) in the Western Conference, just one point behind Seattle Sounders FC.

Forward Cade Cowell, 17, was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 3 after tallying one goal and two assists in the Quakes' victory on Saturday. In addition to Cowell, midfielder Jackson Yueill was also selected to Major League Soccer's Team of the Week after scoring two goals, the first multi-goal game of his career.

The Quakes look to build on their momentum when they face Real Salt Lake this Friday, May 7 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Kickoff for Friday's road match is set for 6:30 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast live on the NBC Sports app, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF. The match will also air on NBC Sports Bay Area via tape delay.

LAST GAME VS. D.C. UNITED (5/1)

Hot Start

The Earthquakes currently hold a 2-1-0 record (6 pts.) during the 2021 MLS regular season, moving them to second place in the Western Conference, just one point behind first-place Seattle Sounders FC.

National Recognition

17-year-old forward Cade Cowell was named the MLS Player of the Week for Week 3, becoming the third-youngest player to earn the accolade. Cowell and midfielder Jackson Yueill were also named to the MLS Team of the Week. Cowell's remarkable form earns him a second consecutive appearance in MLS Team of Week just three weeks into the regular season. He has been selected as a finalist for the MLS Player of the Week twice in seven career starts, winning once.

Dominating the First Half

On Saturday, the Earthquakes scored three goals in the first half of a match for the first time since defeating Orlando City SC 3-0 at home on August 31, 2019. The last time the Quakes recorded three goals in any half was in a 4-0 road win versus the LA Galaxy on October 14, 2020.

Goals Galore

The Quakes tallied seven goals over a two-match span for the first time since 2015 (5-0 vs. Sporting Kansas City, 8/19/2015; 2-0 vs. D.C. United, 8/22/2015).

Catch Him if You Can

Forward Cade Cowell scored his second goal of the season and third of his MLS career. It also marked the first game-winning goal of his career. Additionally, Cowell tallied an assist on Chofis' goal and Yueill's second goal, marking his second and third assists of the season and third and fourth assists of his MLS career. Cowell is the youngest player in MLS history to tally a goal and an assist in consecutive matches.

Leading the League

Cowell currently leads the league in assists (3) and is tied with the LA Galaxy's Chicharito for most goals + assists (5).

Sealing the Win

Midfielder Jackson Yueill scored his first and second goals of the season and fifth and sixth goals of his MLS career. It marked the first multi-goal game of Yueill's career.

Helping the Cause

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza tallied an assist on Cowell's goal, marking his first assist of the season and 23rd of his MLS career.

Everyone Contributes

Defender Tanner Beason was credited with an assist on Yueill's first goal, marking his first career MLS assist.

Important Milestone

Midfielder Judson made his 50th MLS appearance.

Challenging Opponent

Real Salt Lake are undefeated in 2021 (2-0-0), matching San Jose's six points in the Western Conference with one less match played. They are the only team in MLS to have won all of their matches to date.
