Earthquakes Weekly Update: May 17, 2021

San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes played two of three straight home matches last week at PayPal Park, falling to Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 on Wednesday and the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Saturday. Saturday's match saw the MLS debut of Quakes forward Benji Kikanovic and the season debut of Quakes midfielder Jack Skahan.

The Earthquakes will now prepare to play their final match of a three-game homestand on Saturday, May 22 vs. Sporting Kansas City, presented by Coca-Cola. The match kicks off from PayPal Park at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Facing Seattle

The Quakes are now 10-14-8 in regular season matchups versus Sounders FC, including a 5-4-5 record as hosts.

As It Stands

The Earthquakes now hold a 3-3-0 record (9 pts.) during the 2021 MLS regular season and are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference.

San Jose earned 12 corner kicks, their most in a single match since July 15, 2020 (22).

Testing the Keeper

The Quakes took 20 shots, their most in a single match since July 15, 2020 (30).

Fair Play

San Jose committed just five fouls, their fewest in a match since Sept. 25, 2019 (5).

MLS Debut

Forward Benji Kikanovic made his MLS debut, entering as a substitute in the 63rd minute.

Season Debut

Midfielder Jack Skahan made his first appearance of the season and second of his MLS career, entering as a substitute in the 66th minute.

Back in Action

Defender Oswaldo Alanis returned to action after missing the last three matches to injury, starting and playing 90 minutes.

Hosting Sporting KC

The Earthquakes hold a 25-27-8 overall record in regular season matches against Sporting Kansas City, including a 17-6-7 record at home.

Hostile Territory

The Quakes have outscored Sporting Kansas City 43-27 as hosts.

Looking Back

San Jose defeated Kansas City 4-1 in their last regular season meeting at PayPal Park on April 29, 2019, scoring four straight until conceding a consolation goal from Sporting KC.

Current Form

Sporting Kansas City currently hold a 3-2-1 record (10 pts.) in the Western Conference, just one point ahead of the Quakes (3-3-0, 9 pts.). Sporting KC are also 2-2-0 in their last four matches, including a 3-0 shutout win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Earthquakes announce time change for May 29 road match vs. LA Galaxy

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last Thursday that the club's road match against the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, May 29, originally scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PT, has moved to 4:00 p.m. PT. The match will be televised nationally on UniMás and TUDN.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Quakes Academy extended their undefeated streak for the second straight week, as the Boys' U-13s (10-0) and U-14s (7-0) defeated the San Francisco Glens on Saturday, May 15. The next games for the Boys' U-13s and U-14s will be next Saturday, May 22 when they take on the SF Elite.

The Boys' U-15s and U-17s matches against Real Salt Lake on June 5 have been postponed. However, they will return to play on June 12 against Sacramento Republic FC.
