San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they will be taking part in the United States Soccer Foundation Passback Program. The team will accept donations of soccer equipment at their home games on July 11 against Toronto FC and July 25 against D.C. United at Buck Shaw Stadium. Bins will be available at the gates to the stadium for all new and used soccer equipment donations.
The Passback Program "Share the Equipment. Share the Game!" is a grassroots initiative designed to help meet the soccer uniform and equipment needs of all communities, regardless of income, gender or location. The goal of the program is to increase the collection of new and gently used gear and equipment by 40 percent in disadvantaged and "at-risk" soccer communities nationally and abroad.
In 2008, the U.S. Soccer Foundation partnered with Major League Soccer to collect and redistribute 42,065 pieces of new or gently-used soccer equipment.
This season, Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon is the official team spokesperson for the Passback Program. The spokesperson that does the most to "Share the Equipment. Share the Game" will be voted the U.S. Soccer Foundation's "Humanitarian of the Year" and the team that collects the most gear by the end of the season will be voted "Team Humanitarian of the Year."
