CHIVAS USA HISTORY IN U.S. OPEN CUP PLAY: In Tuesday night's U.S. Open Cup match at the Charleston Battery, the Red-and-White will be looking for its first Open Cup victory since 2005, when the team won a road match 3-2 in extra time against the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Second Division. That match was Chivas USA's only other official match in the Carolinas, and the team followed it with a loss in the fourth round to the LA Galaxy. In 2006, Chivas USA lost to Dallas Roma FC in the Third Round, and fell to the Seattle Sounders, then of USL-1, at the same stage in 2007 and 2008.
CHIVAS USA RETURNS TO LEAGUE ACTION FOR JULY 11 HONDA SUPER CLÃSICO VS. GALAXY: With the Red-and-White at the halfway point of the MLS season, the team sits just one point out of first place overall in the league, behind the Houston Dynamo. Chivas USA returns to league play on July 11 against the LA Galaxy in the second Honda Super Clásico of the 2009 season, after the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie on April 11. The Galaxy currently trail the Red-and-White in the standings by nine points, with a 3-3-9 record (W-L-T) for 18 points, compared to Chivas USA's 8-4-3 mark, good for 27 points. A free Rally Towel, courtesy of Honda, will be available to the first 10,000 fans through the gates for the match, and tickets can be purchased by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visiting cdchivasusa.com.
ATIBA HARRIS HEADER EARNS TIE AGAINST SAN LUIS IN SUPERLIGA: An 88th minute goal from midfielder Atiba Harris gave Chivas USA a 1-1 draw against San Luis of the Mexican First Division in the final SuperLiga 2009 match for both clubs. Chivas USA had been eliminated from the tournament earlier on Saturday night by virtue of Tigres UANL's 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire, and played spoiler by keeping San Luis from the semifinals of the tournament with the tie, with the Fire and Tigres advancing out of Group A. San Luis' goal came on an Alfredo Moreno penalty kick in the 54th minute, which followed a foul in the box by Chivas USA goalkeeper Lance Parker. Chivas USA midfielder Cesar Zamora, signed on May 28, 2009 from the Chivas USA U-18 Team, played in his first-ever professional match, entering the match as a 61st minute substitute for Carey Talley.
BORNSTEIN AND KLJESTAN HELP U.S. TO SECOND PLACE FINISH IN CONFEDERATIONS CUP: Chivas USA players Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan have now finished their participation with the U.S. National Team at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, helping the team to its best-ever finish, second, at a FIFA tournament. Bornstein played in all five of the U.S.' matches, starting against Italy (3-1 loss), Brazil (3-0 loss), and Egypt (3-0 win), and entering as a late sub against Spain (2-0 win) and Brazil (3-2 loss). Midfielder Sacha Kljestan played in three matches, starting in the first match against Brazil and entering late against Italy and in the championship game against Brazil. The U.S. set up the date in the final by beating long odds with a 3-0 victory over Egypt to qualify for the semifinals, followed by a 2-0 upset victory over the top team in the world, Spain, and was winning 2-0 at halftime over Brazil before the 5-time World Cup winners came back to win. Both Bornstein and Kljestan have made 20 appearances for the U.S. National Team.
RED-AND-WHITE AT HALFWAY POINT OF 2009 MLS SEASON: With 15 of 30 MLS matches played, Chivas USA has started strong, owning an 8-4-3 (W-L-T) record, good for 27 points and a tie for the league lead with the Houston Dynamo. This is the team's best record at the halfway point of a season. Last season, the Red-and-White were 6-6-3 (21 points) at the midpoint, while the team was at 7-5-3 (24 points) in 2007 and 6-5-4 (22 points) in 2006. In 2005, the team's first season, the team was just 1-12-3 (6 points) at the midpoint of the 32-game season. In all years but 2006, the team has earned more points in the second half of the season than in the first.
GOALKEEPER ZACH THORNTON SETS TEAM AND PERSONAL RECORDS: Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton earned seven shutouts in the first 15 matches of the season, which gave the goalkeeper 65 shutouts in his career, tied with San Jose's Joe Cannon for second on the MLS all-time charts. In addition to the clean sheets, Thornton also set a new club record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal earlier this year, going 401 minutes between April 22 and May 16, beating the Red-and-White's previous record of 334 minutes, set by Brad Guzan in 2006.
