San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed midfielder Tommy Thompson and defender Marvell Wynne to new multi-year contracts.
Thompson, 21, became the Earthquakes' first-ever Homegrown Player signing on Jan. 22, 2014, following one season at Indiana University where he was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year. Soon after, Thompson became the second-youngest player to ever start a match for the Quakes by earning a spot in the starting XI against Seattle Sounders FC on Aug. 20, 2014.
"Tommy has shown a lot of promise in his first few seasons with the club and is a big part of the young core group of players we want to build around moving forward," said technical director Chris Leitch. "We felt it was important to restructure his contract to ensure he remains in a Quakes kit for years to come."
Thompson has appeared in 47 matches over the past three seasons, making 21 starts. In 2016, the Loomis, Calif. native set career highs in starts (nine) and minutes played (825), while tying his career high in appearances (17). Thompson also tallied three goals and three assists in 11 appearances on loan with Sacramento Republic FC, the club's then United Soccer League affiliate, in 2016.
"We're very happy we reached an agreement to keep Tommy with the club," said head coach Dominic Kinnear. "We've seen a lot of improvement over the years and know he can become an even better player in the coming seasons."
Wynne, 30, joined the Earthquakes after being selected in Stage Two of the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Process. Over the past two seasons, Wynne has started 63 of the team's 68 regular season matches, tallying three assists. He has played the most minutes of any Quakes' field player during that time (5,531).
"Re-signing Marvell was always a priority for us," said Leitch. "His speed, aggressiveness and ability to play multiple positions across the back line undoubtedly makes us a stronger and deeper club."
