Earthquakes Sign Defender Tanner Beason to New Contract

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed defender Tanner Beason to a new contract through the 2024 Major League Soccer season with a club option for 2025.

"We knew that Tanner was a talented player coming out of Stanford and are very happy with his continued growth at the pro level," said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. "He was an influential member of the team in both 2020 and 2021 and we're excited to reward his contributions with a new contract that will keep him in San Jose for the next few years."

Beason, 24, joined San Jose as the 12th overall selection in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft out of Stanford University and made nine starts during his rookie season. Beason then made 24 appearances, including 22 starts, in 2021 to rank second in both categories among all defenders on the team. The Quakes hold a record of 12-7-10 in Beason's last 29 appearances.

The native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina was a four-year starter during his five seasons at Stanford University (2015-19). He was an NCAA National Champion three times (2015; 2016; 2017), First Team All-American twice (2018; 2019), First Team All-Pac-12 twice (2017; 2018), and the Pac-12 Player of the Year once (2018). He was also among 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, college soccer's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, in both 2018 and 2019. He finished his time at Stanford with 20 goals and 11 assists in 81 appearances, all of which were starts.
