San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank for their game on Saturday, May 30 against Real Salt Lake. The two sides have teamed up to kick out hunger in the local community. Fans are encouraged to join the battle by bringing non-perishable food donations to the May 30 game, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium.
"We are happy to partner with Second Harvest Food Bank for this great cause," said Earthquakes Executive Vice President David Alioto. "There is always a great food need in the local community, and it is even greater now due to the current recession. We believe it is our obligation to do our part to help fill that need."
"We currently serve over 200,000 individuals per month in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, a large increase over last year," said Lynn Crocker, Second Harvest Food Bank Director of Communications. "What is great about working with the San Jose Earthquakes is not just the increased attention for local hunger, but also the public display of how easy it can be to make a big difference in the lives of those in need. Donating food and funds has a very direct impact in our community."
Collection bins will be located at three different entrance gates at Buck Shaw Stadium for non-perishable food items. Donations to Second Harvest Food Bank can also be made at an informational table in the fan zone at the South end of the stadium to help fight local hunger. The Sports Gallery will hold a silent auction for a framed, autographed Earthquakes jersey with the proceeds going directly to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
The night will also feature a representative from Second Harvest Food Bank performing the ceremonial coin toss.
