San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes will open 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday, Aug. 7 against the Montreal Impact at Saputo Stadium. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT on FOX Sports Plus and Univision Deportes 2.

The Earthquakes qualified for the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League after winning Major League Soccer's Supporters' Shield last season, a trophy given to the team with the best regular season record. San Jose was drawn into Group 5 along with the Impact and Guatemala's CD Heredia. Each team will face each other twice - at home and on the road - with the group winner advancing to the next stage, an eight-team single-elimination tournament to be contested next year.

San Jose drew 2-2 with Montreal in their only MLS regular season match of 2013 on May 4 at Buck Shaw Stadium. After falling behind 2-0, Sam Cronin rallied the Earthquakes by assisting on Adam Jahn's 59th-minute goal and scoring an equalizer in the 91st minute.

The last time the Earthquakes participated in a CONCACAF-sponsored tournament was the Champions Cup in 2004. A precursor to the current Champions League format, the Champions Cup was a knockout tournament featuring the top finishers from around the region. San Jose qualified in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
