Last Match
Rapids 1, Earthquakes 1; Saturday, August 13, 2005; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif. The Western Conference leading San Jose Earthquakes extended their home-unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 1-1 tie against the Colorado Rapids at Spartan Stadium. Ricardo Clark scored early in the second half for San Jose, but the Quakes could not hold on to the lead as Jean Philippe Peguero scored for the Rapids to even the match. Earthquakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad snuffed out a Rapids chance in the 13th minute when Colorado took advantage of a San Jose turnover and Jeff Cunningham quickly headed up field. Cunningham dished the ball off to his left to Peguero, who took a few touches before unleashing a hard, low shot that a sliding Onstad was able to knock away. Brad Davis tested Rapids goalkeeper Joe Cannon in the 38th minute when he powered a free kick from 25 yards out on the left side over the Colorado wall to the near post, but Cannon was able to make the save. The Earthquakes survived a wild scramble in front of the goal in the final seconds of the first half, as Onstad and Eddie Robinson managed to knock the ball out of danger several times after Cunningham had a shot from close range. San Jose took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute on Clark's second goal of the season. Alejandro Moreno slipped a pass to Dwayne De Rosario in the middle of the field near the Rapids penalty area. De Rosario found an on-rushing Clark on the right side with a nice ball, and Clark carried the ball into the area before roofing a blast past Cannon to the near post for the 1-0 lead. The Rapids stormed back to tie it at 1-1 in the 57th minute on a Peguero goal. Kyle Beckerman lofted a through ball over the Quakes defense to Peguero outside the Quakes penalty area. Peguero was able to hold off Danny Califf and take a few dribbles toward the goal before dumping a shot over Onstad.
Last Match vs. Real Salt Lake
Earthquakes 3, Real Salt Lake 0; Saturday, June 18, 2005; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, CA The San Jose Earthquakes exploded for three first half goals, downing expansion club Real Salt Lake 3-0 at Spartan Stadium to earn their first ever win over RSL. The Earthquakes wasted no time getting on the board, as Mark Chung recorded his first goal as a member of the Quakes just 1:18 into the match. Following a strong San Jose attack, Dwayne De Rosario worked a give-and-go on the left sideline with Brad Davis. De Rosario hit Davis on an overlapping run, and Davis then dribbled the ball towards the corner before sending a low cross into the Real penalty area. A charging Chung was able to get to the ball to one-time a high blast into the goal for a 1-0 lead. San Jose extended its lead to 2-0 in the 13th minute on a goal from San Jose product and former Leigh High School star Kelly Gray. Gray, making his Earthquakes debut and first start for the club, started the play by receiving a ball on the right wing. He sent the ball forward along the sideline to Ronald Cerritos, who then dished it back to an overlapping Gray near the top of the penalty area. Gray dribbled around Real Salt Lake defender Matt Behncke and into the box, leaving him charging in alone with only the goalkeeper to beat. Gray slotted the ball past a diving D.J. Countess to the far post for his second goal of the season. The Quakes pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the 35th minute on Wade Barrett's first MLS goal since May 4, 2002. Barrett received the ball near midfield before hitting an open Cerritos running up the left sideline. Cerritos carried the ball down the sideline before whipping in a cross through the box that a hustling Barrett was able to charge in on and direct into the goal, putting the Quakes up 3-0. Pat Onstad made a great save to preserve the shutout just four minutes into the second half following a Clint Mathis free kick from 25 yards out. Mathis sent the ball into the six-yard box, where Behncke headed the ball down towards the net. However, an alert Onstad was able to kick the ball off the goal line to save the goal. In the 81st minute, Earthquakes forward Brian Ching made his return to the field after missing the previous five games with a hamstring strain.
