San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes topped the Honduran Olympic Team 4-0 on a cool Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Earthquakes struck first 14 minutes into the match when a pass by John Cunliffe set up Ned Grabavoy for a 25-yard blast. Grabavoy ripped a low shot that found the right corner of the net to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead.
Honduras' Rigoberto Padilla gave Honduras a chance to tie the game in the 19th minute with the cross to Carlos Pavón but Quakes goalkeeper Michael Gustavson leapt to make the save.
Shea Salinas made a solo run in the 21st minute to nearly stretch the lead to 2-0. He received the ball 40 yards from goal and a path opened up for him, but his shot from outside the goal box went directly to Honduras goalkeeper Kevin Hernández.
Salinas took another shot in the 28th minute and this time the ball found the back of the net. He blasted the ball into the upper corner to record his first goal as a member of the Earthquakes and extend the Quakes lead to 2-0.
The Earthquakes continued to attack in the 30th minute when Grabavoy made a short pass to Jovan Kirovski but his shot went over the crossbar.
Kirovski attempted another shot at the goal in the 41st minute after Ramiro Corrales crossed to him but his header went over the post. Kirovski's efforts paid off in the nine minutes into the second half when he headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by Matt Hatzke for a 3-0 advantage.
Just after coming in for Salinas in the 67th minute, Kei Kamara extended the Quakes lead 4-0 in the 69th minute. Kirovski chipped it into the middle of the penalty box from the right side to the front of the goal, where Kamara headed the ball into the net.
The Earthquakes get back in action Saturday, July 19 with a match at Toronto FC. The game kicks off at noon PT from BMO field in Toronto and will be broadcast live on HDNet. Fans can also listen in Spanish on the radio on KLOK 1170.

Quotes
Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop
On tonight's 4-0 victory:
"It's always good to score. Obviously it was a friendly. They weren't the strongest team that we've faced this year but its never easy finding the back of the net and scoring four goals. I think that tonight's game might give us a little more confidence to get the ball in the goal in future games."
On the team's performance:
"I thought we played with a bit of confidence. It's nice when the pressure isn't on. Its nice to see them just going out there and performing well and moving the ball around. I think tonight showed that we can play decent soccer."
On his main goals going into tonight's match:
"Our main goals were to score some goals, get a victory, and not have any injuries. It was a good game to help us get prepared for Saturday's game."
On the recent signings:
"I think the players we've signed have moved some people a little bit. I think it's good because competition on any team is good. It sort of puts some people under pressure, which I think is a good thing that can benefit the team."
Midfielder Shea Salinas
On his first goal for the Quakes:
"It's a relief to finally put one in the back of the net. Unfortunately it wasn't a MLS game. But it still feels good. Right when I saw it going in the back of the net, I just brushed my shoulders off just to get the weight off my shoulders. Hopefully, they keep coming."
On the rest of his performance:
"It helps a lot, it always does. You get a rush after you score a goal. I was trying to keep on that defender. I felt like I was faster than him. I tried to go at him as many times as I could."
Defender Jay Ayres
On the team's performance:
"Clean sheet. I wouldn't say it was a great performance since they came at us pretty hard in the second half. I thought it was a little progress for us. We had a tough day in the reserve game Saturday, so this was much better."
On his play coming back from injury:
"The confidence is getting better and better. I've been back for about a month, starting playing games now since my injury. With every game, my confidence is getting higher and higher. It was good to see four goals tonight. It was good to be part of that."
