Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With third baseman Scott Moore batting in the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday night, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake was felt at Raley Field, but the River Cats held on to beat the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-2.

New Orleans scored once in the second on a Matt Downs RBI-single, and again in the third on a Kevin Mattison solo home run, taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning. After the Zephyrs went down in order in the top half, the River Cats put three runs on the board to take a 3-2 lead.

Jemile Weeks led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Grant Green strikeout and a Michael Taylor single. Michael Choice singled through the hole at shortstop, plating Weeks, then the next batter-Stephen Vogt-connected on a single of his own to load the bases for Moore. He came through with a single to right field, driving in Taylor and Choice, giving Sacramento the 3-2 advantage. Sacramento tacked on its fourth and final run when Green singled-home Andy Parrino in the bottom of the fifth, giving Sacramento a 4-2 win in Thursday's series finale.

Starter Bruce Billings (5-2) continued his strong play of late, holding New Orleans to two runs on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts for the win. He is now 3-0 with 1.42 ERA and 23 strikeouts over his last three starts. Righties Darren Byrd and Brian Gordon combined to shut out the Zephyrs for two innings, each recording a hold. Closer Dan Otero hurled a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout for his 12th save in as many chances.

Moore finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Green, Taylor and Choice each finished 1-for-4. The River Cats out-hit the Zephyrs 6-5, marking the first time during the current homestand that Sacramento out-hit its opponent. The win gives the River Cats their fourth series-split of the season.

The River Cats now hit the road for a short four-game set in Tucson before returning home on May 28 for a short four-game homestand against the Salt Lake Bees. Sacramento lefty Justin Thomas (2-3, 4.89 ERA) will start opposite T-Pads right-hander Wilfredo Boscan (1-0, 4.32 ERA) in Friday night's series-opener at Kino Stadium.
