Early Runs Not Enough in 5-2 Loss

SALISBURY, M.D. - Matt Wood and Gregory Barrios had back-to-back run-scoring hits in the first, but Carolina pitchers Alexander Vallecillo, Aidan Maldonado and Jeferson Figueroa combined to walk 11 batters in a 5-2 Carolina Mudcats loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Mudcats (14-10) scored twice in the first and led 2-0 when Wood and Barrios had their consecutive RBI singles. Those two early runs, however, were all that Carolina scored in the game as they were blanked the rest of the way.

Bradley Brehmer started for the Shorebirds (14-10) and pitched around the early scoring while going through the fourth with two runs allowed on five hits. Darlin Alcantara (W, 3-0) took over in the fifth and held the Mudcats scoreless through the sixth despite walking four batters. Reese Sharp then struck out three (also walked three) over the seventh and eighth. Yaqui Rivera (S, 3) then wrapped it up with a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Alexander Vallecillo started for Carolina and allowed just one hit over four innings. That lone hit, however, was a run-scoring hit from Anderson De Los Santos that scored Stiven Acevedo in the third. Vallecillo left before the fifth with the Mudcats up 2-1 and finished with five walks and six strikeouts.

Aidan Maldonado came in for the fifth and immediately walked two straight before losing a wild pitch and then giving up a two-run single to Samuel Basallo. Basallo also brought in a run and scored one of his after reaching with a RBI triple before scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Maldonado (L, 0-2) ended up allowing four runs on four hits and four walks while taking the loss. He also totaled three strikeouts while working through two and 1/3 innings.

Jeferson Figueroa worked the final inning and 2/3 for the Mudcats and was able to hold the Shorebirds scoreless while walking two and striking out one.

The Carolina pitching staff walked a season-high 11 batters in the loss. It was also the first game that Mudcats pitchers combined to reach double-digits in walks in a game this season. The Shorebirds converted three of those walks into runs.

The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon in Delmarva with the sixth and final game of the series. RHP Jacob Misiorowski is scheduled to start for the Mudcats. The Mudcats lead the series 3-2.

The Mudcats next return home on Tuesday, May 9 when they begin a six-game homestand versus the Fredericksburg Nationals at Five County Stadium.
