Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The early inning proved to be the deciding factor in a Canaries 5-4 win over the Explorers in front of 3,087 fans at the Birdcage.

The Canaries (16-5) started the scoring with a big first inning. David Keesee and Abner Arroyo got the inning going with singles to put runners at the corners. Explorers' pitcher Aaron Wilson threw a wild pitch, allowing Arroyo to advance to second and Keesee to score from third, giving the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Wil Quintana followed with an RBI single to drive in Arroyo, 2-0. Ben Van Iderstine singled and with two runners on base Matt Imwalle hit a three-run blast, his fifth homer of the season, to give the Birds a 5-0 lead.

The Explorers (6-15) came right back in the top of the second. Julian Benavidez walked and Alex Llanos singled to deep left field. Brandon Jones followed with a single to score Benavidez, cutting the Birds lead by one, 5-1. Mike Richardson walked to fill the bases. Pete Pirman singled driving in Llanos, 5-2. Nick McCoola hit a two-out double to score Jones and Richardson to get within one of the Canaries, 5-4.

From that point forward, good pitching dominated the night. Lenny Bays (3-0) relieved Trey Keoppel in the fourth inning and pitched three shutout innings to earn the win. Aaron Garrison bridge the gap to Jerrod Fuell with two shutout innings before the Birds closer picked up his seventh save of the season. Aaron Wilson (0-2) endured the loss for the Explorers despite allowing only two hits and two walks after the five-run first inning.

The Canaries continue the series with the Explorers on Saturday night at the Birdcage. The first 500 kids 12 and under will receive a free wooden bat from Schoeneman's Lumber.
