Saints Sweep Double Header From Aviators

June 1, 2007 - American Association (AA) - Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

The Saint Paul Saints beat the Coastal Bend Aviators 7-2 and 5-1 in two 7 inning contests to sweep a Friday night doubleheader at Fairgrounds Field.

Tim Haines got his first career start for the Aviators but was unable to hold down the Saints powerful lineup. Haines went 5 innings giving up 6 earned runs on 9 hits and 4 walks. The Saints took a 3-0 lead in the third on a homerun by first baseman Marcel Longmire, an error, and 2 additional hits in the inning. Coastal Bend got a run back in the bottom of the third, but Saint Paul broke it open by using 3 walks, two stolen bases and a double by shortstop Brian Sprout to score 4 times. Saint Paul starter Jake Postlewait had a fine outing, giving up just 1 earned run on 8 hits over 6.1 innings. With the win, he improves to 4-1 on the season. Haines falls to 0-1 with the loss.

In the nightcap, the Saints used back to back homeruns in the second by Sprout and the American Association's leading hitter Brent Krause to erase an early 1-0 deficit. They padded their lead to 4-1 with two singles and a triple off starter Kevin Hull in the top of the fourth. Hull did well to keep the game close but his teammates could not break through against lefty Adam Brandenburg who went 5 solid innings allowing just 5 hits and 1 run.

Sprout would finish the doubleheader 4 for 7 with 4 RBI. His infield partner, second baseman Matt Brunson, finished 4 for 6 with 2 RBI.

The Saints appeared to be the more energized of the two teams. Coastal Bend returned early Friday morning from their series at Shreveport, while Saint. Paul, having arrived the day before from El Paso, essentially had an off day Thursday. With the sweep of the doubleheader, Saint Paul improves to 13-9, while Coastal Bend drops to 7-14. The Aviators look to avoid the sweep of the 3 game series tomorrow night. Gametime is 7:05 and can be heard locally on KOPY 1070 AM.
