Trenton Thunder News Release
A five-run first inning built all the momentum the Thunder would need in a 5-3 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,157 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
With Chase Johnson on the mound for Richmond (44-46), the Thunder (51-40) sent nine men to the plate in the top of the first inning. Devyn Bolasky led off with a single to extend his on-base streak to 18 games, and Billy Fleming walked. After a wild pitch allowed both men to advance, Bruce Caldwell delivered a sacrifice fly to center field. Trey Amburgey followed with a RBI-single and later scored the third run on a wild pitch, and Jeff Hendrix and Mandy Alvarez also came through with RBI-singles, with the latter chasing Johnson from the game with two outs.
The Flying Squirrels managed three runs against Thunder starter Michael King. Ali Castillo hit an RBI-single in the third, Dylan Davis led off the fifth with a home run, and Aramis Garcia lined a run-scoring single to left field in the sixth to close Richmond's deficit to 5-3.
Four Richmond relievers combined to hold the Thunder scoreless after the first inning, including right-hander Ryan Halstead, who pitched three scoreless innings to keep the game within reach for the Flying Squirrels. Trenton left a total of seven runners stranded, and hit into inning-ending double plays in the fourth and fifth.
King, however, turned in his seventh consecutive quality start, limiting Richmond to the three runs over six innings. James Reeves struck out five of the six men he faced in two perfect innings of relief, and Caleb Frare maneuvered around a one-out walk in the ninth to record the save.
Your Thunder conclude their homestand on Sunday afternoon at 1pm against the Flying Squirrels. RHP Trevor Stephan (2-5, 5.26) will start for the Thunder, while Richmond has yet to announce its starting pitcher. The first 1,025 kids ages 5 to 13 will receive a Kids Club Retro Hat, presented by ARM & HAMMER. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
