Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Toledo, OH) - Pawtucket scored four times in the first three innings to build an early lead and starter Henry Owens allowed just one run in six innings of work as the PawSox defeated the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.
Matt Spring's solo home run and Travis Shaw's two-run single highlighted the Pawtucket offense in the opening innings as the visitors sprinted out to a 4-1 lead after three. Owens (2-1) worked his way in and out of trouble, allowing five hits, a pair of walks and a hit batter to earn his second win of the season.
PawSox reliever Jess Todd allowed a run in the seventh, but Dana Eveland recorded the final six outs to finish the victory without allowing a hit. Eveland struck out three including the last two batters in the ninth.
Toledo starter Thad Weber (2-3) allowed a sacrifice fly to Bryce Brentz in the first, then Spring's third long ball of the season in the second to put Pawtucket in front 2-0. Manny Pina got the Mud Hens on the board against Owens in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly that plated Steven Moya.
Shaw ripped his two-run single in the third after a walk to Quintin Berry and a single to Rusney Castillo began the inning. Weber lasted just 3.2 innings and was charged with four runs on six hits and three walks. Castillo later added an RBI single in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Berry, Castillo and Garin Cecchini each collected two of the PawSox's 11 hits. Dixon Machado had a double and an RBI single to give him two of Toledo's six hits on the night.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night with first pitch at 6:30pm. Right-hander Steven Wright (1-1, 4.00) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Mud Hens counter with lefty Mike Belfiore (1-3, 5.24). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:15 pm.
