Charlotte Knights News Release

(COLUMBUS, OH) - Carlos Moncrief launched two home runs, Catawba College standout Jerry Sands added another, and the Columbus Clippers beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 10-3 in the opening game of their three-game series from Huntington Park in Columbus, OH on Tuesday. The Clippers used three home runs and 13 hits en-route to winning the first matchup between the two teams this season.

The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning courtesy of Carlos Sanchez, who remained red-hot at the plate. Sanchez, who was named as the International League's Batter of the Week on Monday, came through with a two-run single in the third. The two-run lead didn't last long however.

In the bottom of the third inning, Tyler Holt's two-run triple tied the game against Charlotte starter Erik Johnson, who was saddled with the loss. Johnson (3-2, 3.74) then allowed another run to score when Zach Walters came through with a sacrifice-fly RBI.

The Clippers added to their 3-2 lead on Johnson and the Knights in the fourth inning thanks to home runs by Sands and Moncrief. In all, Johnson allowed five runs over four innings.

One inning later, Chicago White Sox reliever Javy Guerra made his fourth Major League Rehab appearance of the season with the Knights. Guerra allowed five runs while recording just two outs in the inning. Moncrief knocked Guerra out of the game with a three-run home run. Charlotte relievers Daniel Webb (2.1 IP) and Maikel Cleto (1.0 IP) did not allow a run over the final 3.1 innings.

Columbus right-handed pitcher Toru Murata (1-0, 3.86) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to earn his first win of the season. The Japanese native struck-out seven batters on the night and gave way to a bullpen that held the Knights scoreless over the final three frames.

Sanchez finished with two hits on Tuesday -- upping his batting average to a league-high .411 on the season. The Venezuelan native, who is also leading the league in hits with 39 - finished the contest 2-for-4 with two RBIs. He now has 281 career hits in a Knights uniform, which is good for sixth all-time in franchise history.

Matt Davidson, who entered the game tied for the lead in home runs with five - launched his sixth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning. Davidson is now leading the IL in long balls. Dan Black walked in the fourth inning to extend his on-base streak to 23-straight games. Black, who is hitting .339 on the season, has the longest current streak in the IL.

The two teams will move on and play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday with first pitch once again set for 6:35 p.m. from Huntington Park. Charlotte RHP Kyle Drabek (0-0, 3.38) gets the nod in game two against Columbus LHP Michael Roth (1-1, 3.27). Pre-game radio coverage starts at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM and charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
