Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - After a 15 inning affair on Saturday that nearly took the Pelicans and Frederick Keys into Sunday morning, there was bound to be a bit of a letdown between the two ballclubs coming into their afternoon affair on Sunday from BB&T Coastal Field. Unfortunately for the Pelicans, the Keys had three innings of offense left in their bats, pushing across eight runs in the first three frames sending the Pelicans to an 8-4 defeat in the rubber game of the series.
J.J. Hoover got the nod on the hill looking to eat up some innings after the Pelicans bullpen tossed nine frames on Saturday night, but Hoover (0-2) couldn't find any consistency on the hill, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits in just three innings, leaving it up to the bullpen to finish out the ballgame.
Luckily for the Pelicans, Panamanian righty Yeliar Castro answered the call for a beleaguered bullpen, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just two hits. Castro also struck out a season-high eight in his time on the hill, the most for any Pelicans pitcher in 2010.
Every member of the Keys lineup notched a base hit except for second baseman Michael Mooney as leadoff hitter Xavier Avery knocked a season high four base hits. The top of the third was the death knell for the Pelicans, surrendering five runs on seven hits as the Keys batted around for the second time in three innings.
On the offensive side for the Pelicans, Gerardo Avila extended his hit streak to five games with a second inning single, and Calvin Culver went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
The Pelicans now hit the road for a season-high seven game road trip that takes them through Potomac for four games and Lynchburg for three. First pitch on Monday from Pfitzner Stadium is scheduled for 7:03 ET.
The team returns home for a seven-game homestand starting Monday, May 10 as the Birds welcome in the Kinston Indians.
