Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE (MAY 2, 2010) - Ozzie Lewis and Justin Greene had career games as the Dash scored 14 straight runs over a five inning span to blast the Blue Rocks 14-7 on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. Winston-Salem trailed 4-0 after one inning, but went up by ten runs with yet another offensive outburst. The Dash won the three-game series and avenged its only series loss of the season to Wilmington one week earlier.
The Blue Rocks (10-13) jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning against Dash starter Charlie Leesman (4-1). The big hit came from Salvador Perez, who belted a two-run double and scored on Ryan Wood's single to make it 4-0 Rocks.
Winston-Salem (17-6) halved the Wilmington lead in the second inning on a two-run single by Greene to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Dash again got to starter Ivor Hodgson (2-1) in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Jordan Cheatham. Winston took the lead on a two-run double by Brandon Short, who extended his 2010 professional baseball-best hitting streak to 20 games. The two-bagger put the Dash up 5-4.
Later in the inning with Drew Garcia at the plate, Hodgson threw a ball to the backstop that appeared to be a wild pitch, advancing Short to third base. But home plate umpire Shaylor Smith said the pitch hit Garcia in the foot and sent Short back to second. An irate Joe McEwing argued the call for several minutes and was eventually ejected from the game.
The Dash hitters didn't seem to mind the absence of their manager, as they struck back with a five-run fifth inning. After the first two reached against Hodgson, Jason Bour hit a two-run ground rule double to put Winston ahead 7-4.
Wilmington manager Brian Rupp lifted his starter in favor of Harold Mozingo, who was making his High-A debut. He walked Kyle Shelton, got Cheatham out on a foul pop-up, then surrendered a three-run home run to Justin Greene to give the Dash a 10-4 lead.
Winston scored for more times in the sixth, getting an RBI double from Shelton, a two-run triple by Cheatham, and an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Greene. After trailing 4-0 after one inning, the Dash battered Wilmington pitching to take a 14-4 lead after six.
The Blue Rocks scored three times off Dylan Axelrod in the seventh inning to account for the final margin.
Greene drove in a career-high six runs on the day, eclipsing his previous high of four he had set just this past Thursday. He went 3 for 4 on the day and now owns the team lead in RBI with 22 this season.
Lewis tied a career high with five hits, going 5 for 6 with four runs scored. A bid for his first-ever six-hit game was foiled in the ninth inning when he grounded to second base. He also scored four runs on the afternoon.
Cheatham had his second triple in four games for Winston-Salem and drove in three runs on the day, while the team also got multi-hit games from Short (3 for 6), Bour (2 for 5), and Shelton (2 for 3).
The Dash won despite getting zero hits from its 2-3-4 hitters (Garcia, Jon Gilmore, Seth Loman). Loman's ten game hitting streak ended, while Gilmore was the only Dash player to not reach base on the afternoon.
The team's 18 hits tied a season high. The Dash also posted 18 hits on April 14 against Potomac.
Winston-Salem continues its seven-game road trip with a four-game series with the Frederick Keys on Monday night. RHP Nevin Griffith (5-0, 1.44) hopes to continue his perfect start to the season against LHP Cole McCurry (1-1, 4.58). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday, May 7 for a three-game series against the Salem Red Sox. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
