Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Little did the Stockton Ports know on Thursday night that a two-run homer would be their undoing. The San Jose Giants for the third time in the series got a two-run homer from cleanup batter Chris Shaw and it proved to be enough to lift the Giants to a four-game series sweep as Stockton stranded nine base runners in a 2-1 loss at Banner Island Ballpark.
Ports starter Brett Graves (2-4) looked as if he would breeze through the top of the first after retiring the first two batters. C.J Hinojosa, however, extended the inning with a single to right and Shaw followed with a two-run homer to the short porch in right field that gave the Giants a 2-0 lead. Those were two of only three San Jose hits in the contest.
Graves gave up a one-out infield single in the second inning to Jose Vizcaino, Jr., who was subsequently caught stealing to end the inning. That stood as the final Giants hit of the contest. Graves, despite retiring 14 of the final 16 batters he faced without allowing a hit in that span, suffered the loss after going a season-high 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out four.
Giants starter Sam Coonrod (1-1) found ways to escape early trouble. In t first inning, B.J. Boyd singled with one out and Joe Bennie followed with a double that put runners at second and third. Coonrod would bear down and strike out Tyler Marincov to prevent a productive out and get Sandber Pimentel to ground out to first to end the inning.
Stockton put runners at first and second with one out in the second, but Coonrod induced an inning-ending double-play off the bat of Argenis Raga to escape the jam. The Ports couldn't make anything of a one-out double by Boyd in the third or back-to-back one-out walks in the fourth.
Coonrod earned the win, going six innings and allowing four hits while walking three and striking out three.
Stockton's lone run of the game came in the seventh when Jose Brizuela hit his second home run of the series, a solo blast off Giants reliever Dusten Knight, to cut the Giants lead to 2-1.
Reyes Moronta pitched around a leadoff walk in the eighth and set the next three batters down in succession, including a pair of strikeouts. Rodolfo Martinez (SV, 8) made his third appearance of the series in the ninth to close out the game. Martinez gave up a two-out walk to Brizuela and then a pinch-hit single to John Nogowski before getting James Harris to ground out to the shortstop Hinojosa to end the ballgame. Martinez notched his third save of the series and eighth of the season.
After being swept by the Giants, the Ports welcome the Modesto Nuts back to Banner Island Ballpark to begin a three-game home-and-home series on Friday night. Heath Fillmyer (2-1, 4.73 ERA) takes the ball in the opener for Stockton, opposed by Modesto left-hander Sam Howard (1-0, 2.70 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
