Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Rome, Ga. - For the second straight game the Hudson Valley Renegades erased an early deficit to defeat the Rome Braves 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon at AdventHealth Stadium.
The Braves jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the second when Brandon Parker ripped an RBI double to left off Joel Valdez. A bases-loaded walk to Kevin Kilpatrick two batters later pushed across another run to grow the Rome advantage to 2-0.
Hudson Valley broke through against Ian Mejia in the top of the fifth, when Aldenis Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly to center to chase Spencer Henson home. In the top of the sixth, the Renegades went in front 3-2 when Ben Rice clubbed a two-run home run to right off Mejia (1-1). It was Rice's second home run in as many games.
Rafael Flores and Sanchez each tallied RBI singles in the frame to grow the Renegades lead to 5-2. Sanchez finished with a strong game at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, one of three 'Gades to finish with multiple runs batted in.
That was made possible by Valdez settling down after the turbulent second inning. The left-hander allowed just two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings, walking four and striking out six.
Harold Cortijo (3-0) backed up Valdez with 2.0 shutout innings of relief, striking out five Rome batters to keep the Renegades in front. Danny Watson surrendered a run on an Adam Zabrowski RBI double in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-3. The Braves put the tying run on first base with two outs in the eighth, but that was as close as they would get.
The Renegades struck for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Rafael Flores to break the game open and lead 8-3. Flores finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Rome struck for a run against Carlos Gomez when Kevin Kilpatrick and Geraldo Quintero hit back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to 8-4, but that was all the Braves could muster in the frame.
With the win, Hudson Valley picked up its first win in a day game this season.
The Renegades and Braves continue their series on Thursday night at AdventHealth Stadium. RHP Tyrone Yulie (0-0, 4.15) toes the rubber for Hudson Valley, while Rome answers with RHP J.J. Niekro (0-1, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 6:45.
