Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - July 26, 2011. The Madison Mallards were defeated by the Battle Creek Bombers 10- 5 in front of 6,131 fans at the "Duck Pond" Tuesday night. The Mallards could not find a way to comeback after the Bombers scored nine runs in the first three innings off of starter Tom Windle (Minnesota).
The Bombers scored all ten of their runs within the first four innings by tallying four in the first, three in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth. By the time the Mallards had retired the first out in the third inning, all nine of Battle Creek's hitters had reached base.
The Bombers were led by Jordan Dean (Central Michigan), Daniel Rockett (Texas - San Antonio), and Jimmy Martinez (Western Michigan), who all had two hits on the night. Dean, Rockett, and Ryne Otis (Taylor University) drove in two runs each. Six of the ten hits the Bombers had went for extra bases, including a triple by Martinez in the second and a home run by Otis in the first. Seven of the nine batters had hits, and everyone in the starting lineup scored at least once.
Madison made a valiant effort in trying to come back Tuesday, but Battle Creek had built too much of a lead, as they were up 10-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Mallards scored three times in the fourth, which included a two-run home run by catcher Matt Mirabal (Illinois State). Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) and Zack Powers (Florida) also scored in the inning. The Ducks tallied two more times in the eighth on a two-run double by Willie Argo (Illinois). Mirabal and Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) led the team with two hits. Mike McQuillan (Iowa) was also 1-for-2 with two walks.
Picking up the win was Ben Ballantine (Michigan). Ballantine, who started for the South in the 2011 Northwoods League All-Star game, pitched five innings, allowing three runs (all unearned) on six hits. He walked two and struck out three to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Windle took the loss for the Mallards and is now 1-3. He managed to go only three innings and allowed nine runs (six earned) on seven hits. He walked three and struck out six. Travis Parker (St. Louis) pitched three innings in relief and allowed the other Bombers' run. Like Windle, Parker struck out six.
Dan Tobik (Tennessee - Martin), Michael Handel (Minnesota), and Powers each saw an inning of action as well. Powers struck out the side in the ninth, and as a team, the Mallards notched 17 strikeouts.
The Mallards and Bombers will conclude their two-game set Wednesday in a 7:05 p.m. game at the "Duck Pond." Jonathon Crawford (Florida) will go up against Troy Forton (Western Michigan).
