Early Deficit Too Much for Ems

EUGENE, OR - After giving up five runs in the first two innings, the Eugene Emeralds could not climb out of the deficit, getting shut out for the fourth time this season in a 11-0 loss to the Boise Hawks in front of 3,574 at PK Park.
It started out with a fly out from Willie Abreu before the hits started to fall for the Hawks (8-14, 29-31) in the top of the first. Eury Ramos (1-4) gave up a walk, a double, and a single to the next three batters, allowing a pair of runs to score. A caught stealing and a pop out ended the inning, but Ramos' struggles continued in the second.
Four straight singles scored a run to make it a 3-0 game and loaded the bases to start the second inning. Terrin Vavra then hit a sacrifice fly to Nelson Velazquez, but he dropped the ball allowing two runners to score and made it 5-0.
Ramos finally got out of the inning after the next three batters, but the damage was done. Ramos only lasted two innings, giving up six hits and five runs, four earned, with two walks and a strikeout. Yan De La Cruz came out for the third inning and gave up a singled but faced the minimum after a strike out and caught stealing ended the inning.
De La Cruz worked a perfect fourth inning before giving up a run in the sixth after Willie Maciver was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a stolen base and a Daniel Jipping single.
Sean Barry replaced De La Cruz in the sixth and gave up a walk, a single, and a sac fly to make it a 7-0 game before settling in. Barry gave up just one more hit in two innings, completing three total innings with two hits, one run, one walk, and six strikeouts.
Ems catcher Brennon Kaleiwahea pitched in the ninth. He gave up four hits, four runs, three earned, and one walk to finish the game.
The Ems (10-12, 24-36) had chances to get on the board but could not capitalize. They had runners at second and third with two outs after Jonathan Sierra got hit by a pitch in the sixth. Jake Slaughter then smacked a double to left before Gustavo Polanco roped a ball right at the third baseman for the final out of the game.
Eric Gonzalez then doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded there after two ground outs and a fly out.
The Ems will send left Faustino Carrera to the mound to face off against the Hawks righty Justin Valdespina. It is Star Wars Night at PK Park, so bring your favorite lightsaber and head to the game. Tickets can be purchased at emeraldsbaseball.com.
