Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters opened up the second-half of the 2015 season with a 6-0 loss to Southern Maryland in front of 6,543 fans. With the season-opening win over Lancaster moved to the second half, the Skeeters drop to 1-1 in the second half and 37-35 overall.
The Skeeters offense was held to just four hits in the loss. Josh Geer suffered his second loss in the Sugar Land uniform, falling to 3-2.
Southern Maryland struck for three runs in the top of the first after the first four batters of the game hit for the cycle in consecutive at-bats. Fred Lewis tripled over the head of centerfielder Denny Almonte before coming in to score on a double down the right field line from Casey Stevenson. Zach Wilson cleared the wall in left with a two-run home run to clear the bases and put the Blue Crabs up 3-0. Daryle Ward singled off the glove of first baseman Travis Scott to complete the cycle for Southern Maryland. Skeeters' starter Josh Geer escaped further trouble by inducing three-straight flyouts to end the inning.
The Blue Crabs added a pair of runs in the fifth following a wild pitch on a swinging strike three with two outs. Prior to that at-bat, Casey Stevenson reached on a single up the middle before Wilson struck out. Geer recorded his second punch out of the inning on a breaking ball in the dirt, but catcher Kelly Cross was unable to get in front of the pitch, allowing Ward to reach on the wild pitch. With the free opportunity, Molina doubled to center, scoring two runs and staking Southern Maryland to a 5-0 cushion.
Southern Maryland added an unearned run in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 6-0. Wilson sprayed a two-out double to left and came in to score on a grounder off the bat of Ward. Skeeters' second baseman Ryan Adams ranged deep in the hole to cover the ground ball, but an errant throw back to first allowed Wilson to come in to score.
