Eagles Week In Review

November 12, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release

Tuesday, November 6; Blazers Hand Eagles Record Tying Third Non-Win in a Row

In their first meeting since game seven of the conference semi-finals last season, the Oklahoma City Blazers knocked off the Colorado Eagles 5-3 as the Eagles wrapped up their four-game road trip; Colorado took three points (a win and a shootout loss) out of the road trip before heading home for seven straight games at the Budweiser Events Center.

Thursday, November 8; Filipic, Hartsburg, Tobler Out

The Colorado Eagles announced that forwards Ryan Tobler, Chris Hartsburg and Fraser Filipic have sustained injuries that will keep them out of the lineup. "We will continue to push forward without these important players, and other players will have to pick up the slack," said president, general manager and head coach, Chris Stewart. All three were off to fast starts this season.

Friday, November 9; Arizona Wins in Colorado, Eagles Winless Streak Reaches Four

The Arizona Sundogs 3-2 win against the Colorado Eagles made history in more ways than one. Not only was it the first time either team had won in the other's building, but the loss gave the Eagles their longest winless streak ever (four games). One thing that did not change in the series is that each game this year has been decided by a single goal.

Saturday, November 10; Colorado Ends Record Winless Streak With 100th Win at BEC

The Colorado Eagles ended their record four-game winless streak with a 5-3 victory over the Texas Brahmas. The win was also their 100th at the Budweiser Events Center. Seth Leonard had three points (2-1-3) and the Eagles out-shot the Brahmas 51-29 as Ian Keserich earned his first professional win.

The Week Ahead

Friday, November 16; Oklahoma City Comes to Colorado

The Blazers come to the Budweiser Events Center just over a week after the Eagles visited Oklahoma City. The Eagles will look to even the season series as the Blazers defeated the Eagles 5-3 on November 6. It will be Oklahoma City's first visit to Colorado since game seven of the conference semi-finals in last season's playoffs. Heading into the week, the Blazers trail the Eagles by two points in the Northwest (10-8).

Saturday, November 17; Laredo Returns to Site of President's Cup Finals Loss

The Bucks bring the league's second-best record (10-1-0) to the BEC for the first meeting between the two teams this year. The last time Laredo was here, they watched the Eagles celebrate their second President's Cup championship. Laredo suffered their first loss of the 2007-08 season over the weekend, falling just one win short of setting a new league record for consecutive wins to start a season (10 is the current record, now shared by three teams).

Stats & Streaks

Shooting Spree - Colorado's Ed McGrane and Greg Pankewicz have the first and third-most shots in the CHL respectively (60 and 54). In last season's playoffs, the two Eagles were again in the top three (McGrane in second, Pankewicz in third) with 96 and 92. McGrane finished eighth in the league last season with 259, but Pankewicz had only 76 because he played in only 18 games (4.5 shots per game).

Leading Defender - Defenseman, Aaron Schneekloth, is tied for third in the CHL among blueliners with 10 points (4-6-10). Also among d-men, his three goals tie him for fifth in the league, and his seven assists tie him for fourth. He's also tied for third in defensive power play points with four (1-3-4).

Hurting Up Front - The Eagles are hurting as they head into the fourth week of the season with two all-stars and a prized fighter on the IR. Heavy-hitting offensive threats, Ryan Tobler and Chris Hartsburg, are out of the lineup after both were off to fast starts this season. Tobler -- who reached 500 professional points and 200 professional goals over the opening weekend -- had accumulated eight points in five games (4-4-8) and Hartsburg had five in six (3-2-5) while tying for the team lead with two power play goals. Fraser Filipic, voted the "Best Fighter" in the CHL's "Best of the Best" poll (and third in "Best Fighter Pound for Pound"), was also off to a productive start with four points in seven games (1-3-4).

Offensive Defenseman - Colorado's Jay Birnie and Les Borsheim -- both known for their physical play -- are bringing a new meaning to the term offensive defenseman as both have been moved to forward to help with the Eagles' forward-shortage due to injuries. In their first game up front, the two players combined for two of Colorado's three goals in a 5-3 loss to Oklahoma City. In the three games since the positions switch, Birnie has registered one goal on five shots to go along with his 21 penalty minutes, and Borsheim has thrown 10 shots on net along with tallying a goal and 10 PIMs.

Playoffs Part Deux - Colorado's two games this week are against two of the teams they faced in last year's playoffs. On Friday, the Eagles will face the Oklahoma City Blazers (the team they defeated in seven games in the Conference Semi-Finals) and on Saturday, Colorado will face Laredo (the team they defeated in six games in the President's Cup Finals). Heading into the week, Laredo has the second most points in the league (20, 1st in the Southeast), Colorado has 10 points (2nd in the Northwest) and Oklahoma City is trailing the Eagles by two points in the Northwest, good for third place in the division.

(Out)Shoot To Win - The Colorado Eagles are 4-1-1 when out-shooting their opponents. In October, Colorado went 3-1-1 and out-shot their opponents in all five games (213-171). Their record dipped in November when they went 0-3-1 in the first four games and were out-shot in each (143-171). But in their most recent game -- November 10, against Texas -- the Eagles out-shot the Brahmas (51-29) and picked up their first win of the month.
