Eagles Trounce Islanders, Win Weekend Series at Eastlink Centre
January 18, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
For the second Saturday in a row, the Charlottetown Islanders would lose big.
The Cape Breton Eagles flexed their offensive muscles once again Saturday night in front of a much larger Eastlink Centre crowd. Seven Eagles would record multi-point efforts en route to an 8-2 defeat of the Islanders.
For the second night in a row, Shaun Element would get Cape Breton's first goal of the game shorthanded. The hard-nosed 19-year-old would find a pop fly in the defensive end and take off on a partial breakaway, beating Matthew Welsh low for his 28th goal of the season.
The Eagles would keep the intensity up in the period and get two more midway through the period. Ryan Francis, in his return from the CHL Top Prospects Game, would neatly deflect a shot up high on Welsh from down low. For Francis, that would be his 18th goal of the season.
Egor Sokolov would add another tally shortly thereafter, sending the Eagles to the locker room with a 3-0 lead after the first period. The onslaught would continue in the 2nd period as Liam Kidney would get on the board early in the second period.
William Trudeau would answer for the Islanders shortly thereafter, finding a pass from Nikita Alexandrov and wristing one through the wickets of Kevin Mandolese for his fourth goal of the season. Unfortunately, Felix Lafrance would respond 40 seconds later for Cape as Isles coach Jim Hulton would give Welsh the rest of the night off, inserting Jacob Goobie for the remainder of the game.
The goalie changed appeared to work, as the Isles seemed to come to life. Justin Gill, wearing a full face shield after getting cut by a stick near his eye just last night, would get his fourth goal of the season off a great pass from Drew Elliott in the corner. The Isles went in to the second intermission with some jump after pushing the Eagles back on to their heels in the tail-end of the period.
Unfortunately, that's as close as they'd come. The Eagles would push the pace in the third period and Derek Gentile would extend the Eagles lead early in the period for his 13th of the season.
A chippy game already, tensions boiled over late in the third period. Eagles forward Connor Trenholm would catch Thomas Casey with a late hit and the Charlottetown native did not like it, taking a run at the 16-year-old forward, bringing everyone in to the action and sparking a melee behind the Eagles net. Casey was assessed a match penalty for checking to the head when it was all said and done.
The Eagles would score once more after the dust settled and head home having scored 13 goals in two games in Charlottetown.
The Islanders are back in action at home on Saturday, January 25th against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, and we're bringing reinforcements!
