Durocher Nets Pair in Loss to Wildcats
January 18, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
A three goal first period was not enough for the Saint John Sea Dogs (21-23-1-0) as they faced off against the Moncton Wildcats (30-12-0-0) for the second time in as many nights for a Saturday night matchup. Goals from Matt Gould, Dawson Stairs, and two goals from Jeffrey Durocher created the offence for the Sea Dogs in the 7-4 loss at TD Station.
Zachary Bouthillier got the start in net, stopping 46 of the 51 shots he faced in the first two periods before being replaced by Noah Patenaude at the start of the third.
Jeffrey Durocher opened the scoring early with his sixth goal in a Sea Dogs uniform, picking up a rebound and sending it over Olivier Rodrigue's shoulder at 1:21.
Anderson MacDonald was sent to the box at 4:32 for interference, sending the Sea Dogs to the penalty kill. On the kill, Nicholas Deakin-Poot capitalized on a turnover by the Wildcats, picking up the puck and sending it to the front of the net where Matt Gould came in with speed and tipped the shot past the Moncton goaltender.
An interference penalty to Axel Andersson at 8:35 sent the Sea Dogs to the power play for the first time of the night. Jeffrey Durocher put the puck in the back of the net for his second of the night, tipping in a shot by Anderson MacDonald on the power play.
Alexander Khovanov scored 27 seconds later, giving the Wildcats their first of the game.
A tripping penalty sent Jacob Hudson to the box and the Sea Dogs to the power play. Moncton's Phillippe Daoust scored a shorthanded goal, picking up his own rebound on a breakaway attempt at 12:31.
Julian Vander Voet received an interference penalty at 13:57.
Some shoving in the dying seconds of the period sent the Sea Dogs to the power play with 32 seconds left. Moncton's Jacob Hudson, Alexander Khovanov, and Jared McIsaac, as well as Nicholas Deakin-Poot and Dawson Stairs from the Sea Dogs were all given two minutes each for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Shots at the end of the period were 28-13 for Moncton.
A penalty to Jérémie Poirier for cross-checking sent Moncton to power play where Jordan Spence scored, sending a shot through traffic in front of the net and tying the game at 4:55.
Gabriel Fortier scored two quick goals less than a minute apart and gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game.
The Sea Dogs got the man advantage with 1:59 remaining in the period after Zachary L'Heureux was sent off for high sticking.
Shots after the second period were 51-17 for Moncton.
Noah Patenaude replaced Zachary Bouthillier in net to start the third period.
Dawson Stairs brought the game back within one early, sending the puck into the net on his backhand 27 seconds into the period.
Benoit-Olivier Groulx regained the two goal lead for the Wildcats when he scored at 3:47
Frustration started to bubble over and the physicality intensified for the rest of the period, starting with Jordan Spadafore and Sean Stewart dropping the gloves at 4:02. Sea Dogs get a power play as Sean Stewart received an additional two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The play went to five-on-three when Benoit-Olivier Groulx was sent off for hooking 52 seconds later.
Jeffrey Durocher and Alexander Khovanov were left the game after receiving ten-minute misconducts for unsportsmanlike conduct at 16:29.
Jordan Spence scored the seventh and final goal of the night for the Wildcats at 15:15.
Final shots of the game were 69-30 for Moncton.
