Eagles Top Titan to Open Weekend

November 6, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - Strong special teams and great goaltending were the story as the Cape Breton Eagles topped the Acadie-Bathurst 5-2 on Friday night in Sydney.

The special teams fun started with the first goal- a short handed marker coming from Ryan Francis as he tipped a point shot from Jérémy Langlois by Chad Arsenault. Then it was time for the Eagles to get their only even strength goal of the evening- Connor Trenholm finishing a feed from Félix Lafrance to double the advantage.

With two seconds left in the opening period, the Eagles were given a power play. But rather than wait for a fresh sheet of ice, the Eagles made a goal happen right away. It took just .6 seconds for Lafrance to win the draw and Nathan Larose to hammer a one timer over Arsenault. After a review, the Eagles took a 3-0 lead to the dressing room.

Larose was at it again in the second period- another power play one timer, this time from the left circle, blistering the Eagles to a 4-0 lead. The Titan would get on the board before period's end though- former Eagle Adam McCormick found his way onto the scoresheet in his return to Centre 200. He lifted the puck over Nicolas Ruccia on the short side and made it a 4-1 score- which would hold through the second half of the period heading into the third frame.

Before the seven minute mark, Riley Kidney beat Ruccia low along the ice to pull the Titan within two. But once again, the Titan were not able to contain the Cape Breton power play. With just over five minutes Jarrett Baker flipped it through the legs of Arsenault on a one timer and the Eagles had a three goal lead.

Bathurst would get one more substantial chance to get back in the game- Alexis Dubé was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down by Nathan Larose. But after a great deke by Dubé, Ruccia made a sensational save and kept the 5-2 lead until the buzzer.

Ruccia picked up the win, stopping 35 of 37 shots. Arsenault took the loss, allowing five goals on 35 shots.

Both teams called up local net minders to serve as backup with injuries- Michael MacMullin suited up for the Eagles while Andrew Marsh was on the bench for Bathurst.

The same two clubs will go at it tomorrow night at Centre 200. Game time is 7 PM. There is now limited availability to purchase tickets for Eagles home games- full details can be found at https://bit.ly/3jmSmML
