Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Five different Colorado Eagles found the back of the net Friday Night to lead them past the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-3 and snap the Rayz four-game winning streak. Corpus Christi remained in second place in the Southeast Division, but fell to 12-15-3 on the season. The Rayz now have points in five of their last six games and will conclude the weekend with two games against division rivals. Corpus Christi will travel to Austin on Saturday and return home Sunday for Caller-Times Family Day against Rio Grande Valley at 3:05pm. Kids 12 and under receive FREE tickets with a full paying adult. Individual tickets are on sale now. Please call 814-PUCK for more information, or visit the Rayz online at www.ccrayz.com
The Rayz and Eagles played an even back and forth frame for the majority of the first period, but Colorado took advantage with two quick goals late in the frame. At 14:39 while on a power play, Corpus Christi gave the puck away behind their net, leading to Riley Nelson's 13th goal of the year to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The shorthanded goal was the Rayz league-most 11th of the year. The Eagles then made it 2-0 at 15:54 when Steve Haddon beat Kevin Couture on a wrist shot from between the circles. The Rayz outshot the Eagles 11-9 in the period, but trailed 2-0 heading into the second.
Early in the second period the Rayz pulled within one when Joe Blaznek scored on a wrist shot from the left circle at 2:30. Blaznek's goal was the 250th of his pro career and made the score 2-1. However, the Eagles scored 57 seconds later when Fraser Filipic redirected a puck past Couture to make the score 3-1. The Eagles then made it 4-1 on a power play when Brad Williamson roofed a shot from the bottom of the right circle over Couture's shoulder at 5:34. The Eagles capped the scoring in the frame when Scott Polaski muscled a shot that trickled through Couture with 2.7 seconds left in the period. The Eagles outshot the Rayz 20-8 in the frame.
At 6:31 of the third period, Kevin Watters scored his team leading 13th goal of the year on a wrist shot from the right circle to get the Rayz back on the board. Brent Howarth then pulled the Rayz within two with a nice move on Bryan Bridges for his tenth goal of the year. The Rayz pulled their goaltender in the final minutes to get back in the game, but could get no closer and the Eagles held on for the win.
Couture made 39 saves on 44 shots and fell to 0-3-1. Bridges made 26 saves on 29 shots improved to 4-0-1. The Rayz went 0-2 on the power play, and the Eagles were 1-4. The Eagles outshot the Rayz 44-29.
