New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Behind a three-goal third period, the Scorpions won 5-3 over Arizona Friday night. The win gave the Scorps a home-and-home series sweep against their rival.
Just like a few days ago, Arizona got on the board first. Mark Kolanos redirected a David Schlemko shot past goalie Andrew Martin and into the net at the 11:23 mark.
The Scorpions returned the favor three minutes later. Vladimir Hartinger threw a shot towards the net. On its way, the puck found Mitch Stephens who deflected it over goalie Andrew Gallant's shoulder and into the net.
Arizona had trouble clearing the puck out of their zone and it cost them. Vladimir Hartinger intercepted a Sundogs' pass and made two moves to get free in the near circle. With daylight in front of him, Hartinger ripped a slap shot past Gallant giving the Scorps a 2-1 lead.
Arizona came back late in the second period to tie the game. Alex Leavitt created his own space and found himself alone in front of the net, scoring his 17th goal of the season.
New Mexico kicked it into high gear in the final frame. Konrad Reeder gave the Scorps the lead back at the 2:13 mark with a power play goal.
The Sundogs fought back again when Jason Visser sped into the Scorps zone and beat Martin at 3:38. New Mexico responded quickly for the second time when Erik Johnson roofed a shot past Gallant, giving the Scorpions the lead for good. Chris Robertson scored late in the final frame to seal the victory.
The teams dropped the gloves multiple times in the last minute much to the delight of the crowd. Arizona forward Tyler Redenbach saw his 21 game point streak come to an end in Friday's Sundog loss.
Saturday is Bank Of Albuquerque Hat Night. The first 1,500 fans inside the beautiful Santa Ana Star Center will receive a black Scorpions hat for free. The game against Odessa drops the puck at 7:15 p.m.
