LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles (14-8-0-0) toppled the Stockton Thunder (10-15-1-0),7-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Budweiser Events Center.
Over halfway into the first frame, Eagles forward Darryl Bootland stuffed home a power-play rebound on a shot from defenseman Curtis Gedig to gain the 1-0 edge over Stockton.
Eagles forward Jonathan Parker netted the second power-play goal of the game with the help of Bootland and linemate Brock Nixon to take the 2-0 lead over the Thunder, 1:16 into the second period. Just over three minutes later, forward Vitalijs Pavlovs beat Stockton netminder Kent Simpson as he curved around the crease to shove the puck into the net, blocker-side and give Colorado the 3-0 advantage. The Thunder would finally answer on their own power play, as forward Ryan Hayes sent a shot upstairs past Eagles goalie Doug Carr to put Stockton on the board, 3-1, 6:55 into the second. Brock Nixon couldn't let his hot streak go cold; the second-year forward scored his seventh goal in just four games 11:28 into the second to pump the Eagles lead to 4-1.
At the 4:53 mark of the third stanza, Chris Knowlton sped toward Simpson on a breakaway to beat him, with a rocket from the circle, blocker-side and take the 5-1 lead over the Thunder. Less than one minute later Bootland found himself in the exact same situation as Knowlton and bested Simpson in the exact same way to pump Colorado's lead to 6-1. Eagles captain and veteran forward Trent Daavettila gracefully flipped the puck over Simpson, from the top of the crease, 16:32 into the third to finalize the Eagles the 7-1 victory over Stockton.
Bootland finished with two goals and two assists and his fight with Lukas Sutter in the second period gave him his third Gordie Howe hat trick of the season. Carr picked up his sixth win of the season with 26 saves on 27 shots.
