Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Brett Robinson scored twice, Wade MacLeod earned three assists and the Alaska Aces were unable to climb out of an early deficit, dropping a 6-4 defeat to the Idaho Steelheads before 4,034 fans at CenturyLink Arena on Saturday.
The Aces ended their six-game road trip, currently the longest of the season, at 2-4-0 and return home aiming to snap a four-game losing skid next Wednesday at Sullivan Arena against the Bakersfield Condors.
Tickets are available at the Aces Store (corner of 15 th& Gambell), local Fred Meyer locations (via Ticketmaster) or www.alaskaaces.com/tickets .
Justin Johnson scored twice, logging his first two goal game since Dec. 31, 2009 against the Ontario Reign while fellow Anchorage native and UAA graduate Tyler Currier buried his first career Aces goal (also factoring in with an assist on Brendan Connolly's first period goal). Olivier Roy hung on to record 36 saves for the win, while Niklas Lundstrom stopped 21 shots in defeat.
Idaho scored first again with Robinson recording his third goal of the season at 4:21 of the first period, preceding a delay of over five minutes for ice surface clean up on Idaho's Teddy Bear Toss promotional night. The delay settled momentum and the Aces responded on the ensuing shift with Brendan Connolly's snapper from the left circle at 4:47, completing a two-on-one rush with Chris Francis.
Idaho then ripped off three unanswered goals for a 4-1 lead extending into the second period, first with Gaelan Patterson's third goal of the season at 7:59 of the opening period and Charlie Dodero's rebound power-play goal at the left circle, at 5:22 of the second period. Robinson then tucked a seemingly harmless power-play bid from the base of the right circle for his second of the night at 6:56 for a 4-1 edge.
Johnson energized the Aces with back-to-back goals to restore their striking distance position, starting at 10:11 with a wrister from the left circle that caromed off Idaho's Mike Dalhuisen. Johnson's second goal drew the Aces to within 4-3 with 5:01 left when he jammed a rebound past Roy's glove after the Aces forced a turnover in their offensive zone.
Jason Bast, who had a goal and an assist, buried a critical shorthanded goal from the right circle to restore Idaho's two-goal cushion with 1:37 left in the second period, but the Aces were far from conceding.
In part of a third period where they outshot Idaho, 17-7, Currier's first Aces goal came on a snapper from the left circle for a 5-4 deficit. But James Livingston's first goal in over a month put Idaho ahead, 6-4 on a snap shot from 40 feet with 8:46 left in the game.
