Eagles Rally to Top Sags in Overtime

October 19, 2017 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY- Drake Batherson started the scoring for the home team and finished the game in the extra session as the Screaming Eagles topped the Chicoutimi Saguenéens 4-3 in overtime Wednesday night at Centre 200.

Both teams started the game slow but it would be the visitors striking first, as Samuel Houde would cash in on a drop pass from German Rubtsov to put the Sags ahead 1-0 at 8:41. Just 15 seconds later Chicoutimi would give Cape Breton the first power play of the game, but the Eagles couldn't capitalise. It was then the home team that would find itself in penalty trouble, taking three straight minors before period's end, but Chicoutimi couldn't capitalize and it was 1-0 at the break.

The Sags would strike at even strength though, in the second period, as rookie Alexis Gaboury-Potvin corralled a rebound past Kevin Mandolese for his first career goal at the 3:27 mark. Potvin thought he had scored a wrap around in the first period, but the goal was disallowed.

Drake Batherson would put the Eagles back into the game with a beautiful individual effort, racing around Sags captain Olivier Galipeau and lifting it over the shoulder of Alexis Shank to put Cape Breton on the board. Then at the 11:11 mark Cape Breton would tie the game on the man advantage. It took just twelve seconds into the power play as Ross MacDougall blasted the puck through traffic for the overager's first goal of the year.

Chicoutimi would also get a breakthough on the power play, though, in the second period to reassume the lead. An attempted pass from Jérémy Diotte to Liam Stevens bounced out to Kelly Klima who put the rebound in to give the visitors a 3-2 lead heading into the third frame.

Cape Breton would carry the third period, with the better opportunities and outshooting Chicoutimi 14-8. And the Eagles would find the game tying goal as well, on an on innocent looking shot coming off the right boards from Justin Lazure. It was the first goal in the QMJHL for the Screaming Eagles rookie and it was a timely one, tying the game with just over twelve minutes left.

Neither team could find a go ahead marker, and for the first time since their home opener the Eagles were headed to overtime. Quality opportunities were hard to find as both clubs would only earn one shot on goal in the first 2:27- but one shot was all Cape Breton needed.

The play began with Leon Gawanke patiently waiting at the point, outwaiting the defense in front of him and sliding it down to Batherson in front of the goal. Batherson and outwaited Shank, putting it over the Sags netminder for his second goal of the night, and tenth of the season to give Cape Breton the win.

Mandolese stopped 25 of 28 shots in the win, while Shank turned aside 26 of 30 in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles are back on home ice tomorrow night as they host the Shawinigan Cataractes. Puck drop is 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
