Colorado Eagles News Release
TOPEKA, Kansas â The Colorado Eagles set out with a chance to make history on Saturday night when they took on the Topeka Tarantulas in Landon Arena for the second time in as many nights. In pursuit of their twelfth straight victory, Colorado looked to tie the Central Hockey League record for consecutive wins. Only 3 teams (Huntsville, Bossier Shreveport and Memphis) have reached that mark in the history of the CHL. With Paulo Colaiacovo getting the nod in goal, the Eagles did what they've been doing so well lately, winning by a final score of 5-2. They will look to move into sole possession of that record when they travel to Oklahoma City next Friday night, in search of their thirteenth straight win.
In the first period, Colorado applied the pressure early and often taking a 1-0 lead at the 7:02 mark, when Kevin Marsh broke in alone on Tarantula goalie Dwayne Bateman to grab the early advantage. From there it only took two minutes and change for Riley Nelson to make it 2-0, benefiting from a funny bounce off the boards that caught Batemean off guard, leaving Nelson to tuck it into an unguarded net. In doing so, Nelson extended his point scoring streak to 17 games which ties the Eagles franchise record, one that he set himself last season. Colorado out shot Topeka 11-4 in the period, and both teams went scoreless on the power play.
The offensive assault did not regress in the second period, as the Eagles piled on three goals with Nelson and Marsh both getting their second tallies of the evening. In between their goals, Fraser Filipic added one of his own getting help from Karlis Zirnis. While the defense remained strong, allowing only 20 shots all night, the Eagles streak of shutout hockey finally came to an end in the second when Chris Migliore beat Colaiacovo at the 3:21 mark. This ended a streak of 179:58 in which the Eagles had not allowed a goal. However the penalty kill continued it's stellar play, stopping the Tarantulas when they were awarded a two man advantage that lasted for 48 seconds.
The third period proved to be uneventful as neither team could find the net, and the Eagles were able to cruise to their record-tying twelfth straight victory. Greg Pankewicz was held scoreless tonight, effectively ending his 16 game point streak which is the second best mark in franchise history.
The Eagles put themselves in position to break or tie the CHL record for team shutouts in a season, notching their ninth with last nights 4-0 victory. They will have 22 more games to try to match that mark.
