October 15, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
The Eagles rallied from down 2-0 to pick up a 4-3 victory in Val-d'Or, with Cam Squires scoring the winning goal in the final five minutes of the third period.
- Cole Burbidge scored twice in the win for the Eagles, while Thomas Bégin also scored for Cape Breton.
- Val-d'Or's goal scorers were Nathan Baril, Alexandre Guy, and Samuel Fiala.
- Former Eagles forward Matis Ouellet was in the lineup for Val-d'Or but left the game in the second period with an apparent lower body injury.
- Jakob Milota picked up the win, stopping 43 of 46 shots, while Mathis Lussier took the loss, allowing four goals on 30 shots.
Val-d'Or made it 2-0 within the first five minutes, beginning with an Alexandre Guy wraparound marker. Guy set up the second goal at the 4:15 mark, finding Nathan Baril streaking in to beat Milota and finish the scoring for the opening period.
Burbidge gave the Eagles their breakthough late in the second period, and before the halfway mark of the third period Bégin finished a rebound at the left side of the net to tie the game.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game past the halfway mark of the third period, as Émile Ricard won a battle for the puck behind the net and sent it out to Burbidge who buried his second of the game.
A big shot from the left faceoff circle on the power play by Fiala locked the score at 3 with under six minutes to play. But it wasn't a tie game for long- 45 seconds later, Xavier Daigle sent a pass from his own end to Squires who broke through the defenseman and put the puck low by Lussier.
In the final two minutes Lussier was lifted for an extra attacker, but Val-d'Or couldn't find a tying goal and the Eagles picked up the win.
The Eagles now head back home, and are back on the ice Thursday night as the Acadie-Bathurst Titan make their first visit of the season to Centre 200. Puck drop is at 7 PM.
