Slow Start Leads to Loss in Rimouski
October 15, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Halifax Mooseheads News Release
A win wasn't in the cards for the Mooseheads on Sunday as the Herd wrapped up a road trip with a 3-2 loss in Rimouski. Halifax fell behind by three goals in the opening 3:35 of the game at the Sun Life Financial Colisee and it proved to be too big of a hole to climb out of. The Mooseheads finished the three-game road swing with a 1-1-1 record after a 3-2 overtime victory in Baie-Comeau on Thursday and a 3-2 overtime loss in Chicoutimi on Friday.
BOX SCORE
Rookie Dominic Pilote stunned the Moose by scoring just 14 seconds into the contest for the Oceanic to the afternoon crowd of 2,447 on their feet early. Rimouski kept the pressure coming and made it 2-0 on a Mathys Dube marker at the three-minute mark. Mooseheads Head Coach Jim Midgley was then forced to take a first period time-out when Luke Coughlin struck again for the home team just 35 seconds after the Dube goal. Midgley used the stoppage to settle his team and goalie Mathis Rousseau down.
Halifax turned the momentum later in the period as the Mooseheads tried to claw their way back into the game. Mathieu Cataford continued his effective play by knocking in a rebound to get the Herd on the board at 16:33. The goal was his fourth of the season and team-leading 13th point for the Vegas Golden Knights prospect. Then it was rookie Liam Kilfoil who got into the act with a goal in the final minute of the period. Kilfoil just let a soft, but accurate shot fly from the point that fooled a screened Vincent Filion to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Rimouski goalie, Filion, shut down the Mooseheads the rest of the way and stopped the final 19 shots he faced to preserve the win for the Oceanic who were able to improve their record to 5-4-1-0 for the season. Mathis Rousseau lost for the first time this season and made 28 saves on 31 shots. Halifax's record is at 6-3-1-0 through the first 10 games of the year.
Jake Furlong, Brody Fournier, Owen Phillips and Dylan MacKinnon picked up assists in the loss while forward Logan Crosby missed his second game with an upper body injury after getting knocked out of Thursday's game in the first period following a hard hit into the corner boards. Jordan Dumais remains on injured reserve for the Columbus Blue Jackets and is day-to-day with an upper body injury. He has yet to be returned to the Mooseheads from the NHL club.
Halifax will return to action on Scotiabank Centre ice next weekend with a pair of 7pm games on Friday versus Rouyn-Noranda and Saturday against Val d'Or. The first 3,000 fans at the game on Saturday will receive free 30th Anniversary T-Shirts. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca
