NOTES FROM THE GAME
- Maxim Schäfer's goal in the first minute of the second period gave the Chicoutimi Saguenéens a lead they wouldn't relinquish as they defeated the Cape Breton Eagles 3-0.
- It was the first goal of Schäfer's career. Alexandre Desmarais & Émile Guité also scored for the Sags.
-Mathias Hernandez stopped all 24 Eagle shots in his first career shutout. Connor Towle stopped 25 of 28 shots in the loss.
- Chicoutimi's Colby Train was given a five minute major for a game misconduct and a check to the head on Cape Breton's Will Murphy in the second period. Murphy did not return to the game. Another Eagles defenseman, Samuel Kupec, left the game in the third period due to injury as well.
Neither team was able to score in the opening period despite ample power play opportunities- Chicoutimi unable to score with three man advantages, Cape Breton with two, nor could either team score four on four.
It was 46 seconds into the middle stanza when Schäfer cut through the middle of the Eagles zone to beat Towle for the game's opening goal. The Eagles were given a five minute major when Train was sent off, but the power play ended two minutes prematurely when Romain Litalien took a penalty for interference. When the teams returned to five on five, Alexandre Desmarais added to the lead before period's end, racing in on a breakaway for the Sags' second goal.
Both teams had their chances in the third, with the shots reading 11 a piece. Émile Guité scored with just over six minutes to play to push the lead to 3-0. Towle was sent to the the bench for the extra attacker, but the Eagles were unable to get any closer and the score finished 3-0 for the visitors.
The Eagles are next in action next Friday night as they host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, featuring potential 2026 NHL first round pick Lars Steiner & Buffalo Sabres draft pick Samuel Meloche!
