Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Moncton Wildcats got the early jump on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in winning the first of a home and home set between the two teams. Moncton took a 6-0 lead and won by a score of 10-3.
The start of the game looked to be promising as the Eagles drew a power play just 14 seconds into the game. However, Moncton drew a penalty of their own and with Francis Leclerc on the bench for a delayed penalty, Jacob Hudson pushed in a rebound for a short handed goal. Just after the three minute mark, Brady Pataki spun and fired the puck by Kevin Mandolese and Moncton had a two goal lead.
Marc-André Dumont called a timeout to settle his team down, and Eagles blueliner Kyle Havlena did his part by dropping the gloves with Pataki- neither player would return to action after the fight. But Moncton was not to be slowed down as Charles-Antoine Giguère scored a goal that would send Kevin Mandolese out of the net.
Unfortunately for the Eagles William Grimard also allowed three goals in the opening period. Mika Cyr scored consecutive goals, with the first coming on the power play. In the final minute of the period, Dylan Seitz converted a pass from behind the net by Adam Capanelli to earn Moncton's second short handed goal of the period.
The Eagles were given a lifeline as with Jakob Pelletier still in in the box serving the penalty, Tristan DeJong was also sent to the sinbin. Shaun Miller cashed in on the 5 on 3 to put the Eagles on the board, and Cape Breton still had the power play heading into the middle period.
Moncton killed the balance of the penalty, and the game stabilized with no goals for the first 14 minutes. The Eagles were able to outshoot the Wildcats 13-5, and did get on the board again with another power play marker, as Derek Gentile settled a bouncing puck in the blue paint past Francis Leclerc. However Moncton was able to regain the momentum heading into the third period as Mika Cyr converted a passing play from Jeremy McKenna to complete the hat trick.
Period three saw Elliot Desnoyers score on a penalty shot for the visitors, before Miller pulled one back for the home side. Moncton would finish the scoring with a pair of power play markers from Jonathan Aspirot and Capanelli, from the right and left face-off circles respectively.
Leclerc stopped 24 of 27 shots in the win. Grimard took the loss, allowing 7 goals on 27 shots. Mandolese allowed three on eight shots in the first 8:39 of the game.
The Screaming Eagles now head to Moncton to conclude the home and home series with the Wildcats on Wednesday night. Puck drop is at 7 PM, you can catch all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
