Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME

- Cam Squires was the overtime hero as the Cape Breton Eagles topped the Charlottetown Islanders 3-2 to conclude the regular season. The Eagles finished the regular season in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 39-26-3.

- With the win combined with other results around the QMJHL on Saturday, the Eagles learned they will face the Rimouski Océanic in the first round of the playoffs, with the Eagles holding home ice advantage.

- With the victory the Eagles pushed their winning streak to nine games, to tie a team record of nine straight wins set in October 2005.

- Olivier Houde added a goal and an assist for the Eagles while Tomas Cibulka also scored for the Eagles.

- Prior to the game, Charlottetown honoured their 20 year old players Michael Horth, Giovanni Morneau, and Cole Huckins. It was also the final QMJHL regular season game for Eagles players for Cam MacDonald, Zach Biggar, and Conor Shortall.

- Jakob Milota stopped 23 of 25 shots in the win, while Carter Bickle stopped 39 of 42.

It was a game of momentum swings in the first 40 minutes. Houde opened the scoring at 4:22 for the Eagles, cutting from the right wing to the front of the net and ripping the opening goal by Bickle. Charlottetown then took control of the game, but was unable to solve Milota in the opening period.

The first frame moved at a fast pace, with the Eagles taking control of the play as the period came to an end. The final 6:03 of the opening period were played without a whistle.

As the Eagles limited Charlottetown's opportunities, the Islanders went a total of 18 minutes without recording a shot. But not long after the shot drought ended, the Islanders broke the shutout when Matthew Butler put the puck in the top corner over Milota. William Shields backhanded the puck by Milota late in the second period, and Charlottetown took a 2-1 edge into the middle stanza.

Having not scored on the power play in the opening forty minutes, the Eagles man advantage came through in the opening minute of the third period. Cibulka fliipped a shot through traffic and it got by Bickle to knot the score at 2.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the rest of the third period, forcing a forcing overtime. Both teams were denied on their first shot in the extra session, before Squires raced in on a breakaway, beating Bickle to give the Eagles a walkoff victory.

In the coming days, the Eagles & QMJHL will release more information about the upcoming playoff series against Rimouski. Fans are advised to check capebretoneagles.com and Cape Breton Eagles social media channels for playoff ticket information.
