Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles couldn't break a losing streak but picked up a point in an exciting back and forth 4-3 shootout loss to the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
It was a fast, evenly matched first period with neither team able to crack the other- the best opportunity perhaps coming from deking Eagle defenseman Romain Rodzinski who was denied by Francesco Lapenna's pad. Aside from a late penalty to the Eagles for too many men on the ice, which was killed off, the period was all played at 5 on 5.
While no one scored in the first period, it didn't take long for a goal in the second period- Charles-Antoine Dumont lit the lamp just 21 seconds in, tipping a Justin Côté shot by Rémi Delafontaine. However, the Eagles countered before the seven minute mark when Logan Camp buried a rebound off an Ivan Ivan shot to tie the game. Both goalies stood tall, and Delafontaine did his part to keep the game tied with a highlight reel save on Côté.
Ivan produced his own highlight in the final minute of the period, batting the puck to himself out of mid-air, skating into the Drummondville zone and ripping a shot through Francesco Lapenna.
The Eagles carried the 2-1 lead into the third period but once again, a lead didn't last as Tyler Peddle jabbed a loose puck in the blue paint over the line before the six minute mark. Then, after the halfway mark, Tristan Roy flipped a wrister past Delafontaine to give Drummondville their second lead of the night.
There was another twist to come in regulation as with under seven minutes remaining, Maveric Lamoureux lost the puck and Dawson Stairs took advantage, taking the puck behind and around the net, circling and flipping a pass to FJ Buteau who ripped it by Lapenna to tie the game. Neither team could find a go ahead goal and the game headed to overtime.
The Eagles had a prime opportunity to finish the game in the extra session when Kaylen Gauthier was sent off during overtime, but the home side couldn't find a winning goal. The Eagles outshot the Voltigeurs 3-1 in overtime but the game headed to a shootout.
The two teams went blow for blow in the shootout, as the Eagles elected to shoot first- Sean Larochelle scored, and was matched by Drummondville's Luke Woodworth. Then, Ivan and Peddle both failed to score.
After Stairs lit the lamp for the Eagles, Côté had to score to extend the game- and he did. In the first extra session, Kian Bell was denied and Jacob Dion was as well. Following Nicholas Girouard's inability to score, Drummondville's Alexis Morin had the opportunity to finish the game- and did just that to give the visitors the win.
Prior to the shootout, Lapenna stopped 24 of 27 shots to pick up the win, while Delafontaine turned aside 28 of 31 in the loss.
With multiple absences on the blueline, the Eagles recalled defenseman Preston Pattengale. He was -1 while recording three shots on goal.
The Eagles will finish off the four game home stand, and the home portion of the pre-Christmas schedule, against the Moncton Wildcats on Wednesday night.
