Eagles Drop Home Opener to Rage 5-4

LOVELAND, CO- The Colorado Eagles were defeated by the Rocky Mountain Rage 5-4 in the first ever meeting between two teams at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado's Greg Pankewicz had a hat-trick and scored his 1000th career point in the defeat. Rage goaltender David Guerrera made 38 saves in the Rage's first victory in franchise history. Colorado out shot the Rage 42-20 in the game but fell one goal short. The Eagles and Rage will square off 11 more times this season with the next game coming on November 17th at the Broomfield Event Center.

A total of seven goals were scored in the opening period of the 2006-07 season. The Eagles started the scoring just 2:19 into the period on Greg Pankewicz's 999th professional point and 493rd goal of his career. Matic Kralj tied the game at the 10:02 mark of the period on assists from John Dipace and Jordan Little. Three minutes later, the Rage took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Dorian Anneck. Moments later, Eagles right wing Greg Pankewicz scored his 1000th career point and second goal of the game on a short angled shot that beat Rage goaltender David Guerrera. Less than one minute later, Anders Strome gave the Rage a 3-2 lead and less than a minute after that, the Rage took a 4-2 lead on a goal from Nathan Rosychuk. Colorado fought back an tallied a short-handed goal with just seven seconds remaining in the period, a Riley Nelson goal with assists from Erik Adams and Chris Hartsburg. Eagles goaltender Stephan Siwiec gave up four goals on just seven Rage shots and was pulled after the first period. Colorado out shot Rocky Mountain 16-7, but were losing 4-3 after one period.

Eagles goaltender Tim Boron started the second period in net for Colorado. Greg Pankewicz scored his hat-trick goal at the 9:37 mark of the period to tie the game, but that would be the final goal of the game for the Eagles. At the 18:10 mark of the third period, Craig Olynick tallied the game winning goal putting the Rage up 5-4. Colorado again out shot the Rage 13-7 in the period, but couldn't muster another goal against Guerrera.

Colorado had their chances in the third period including a five-in-three opportunity for 53 seconds, but to no avail. The Eagles finished the game out shooting the Rage 42-20 not giving up more than 7 shots in the period, but the opening period four-goal outburst was just too much overcome. Both teams spent plenty of time in the penalty box, a total of 29 penalties were called with the Eagles finishing 2-14 on the power play and the Rage 1-11. The Eagles are now 2-2 in opening night games having won the last two.

These two teams will square off again on Friday, November 17th at the Broomfield Event Center in their second of 12 meetings this season. The Eagles will stay at home for their next four games, they play the Wichita Thunder Friday night, November 27th at the Budweiser Events Center followed up by New Mexico and Arizona.
