Sundogs Open Regular Season with 6-3 Win

HIDALGO, Texas - In CHL Opening Weekend action, the Arizona Sundogs won their first-ever regular season game 6-3 against Southeast Division opponent, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Arizona defenseman Chris Bartolone netted the first-ever goal in regular season play for the Sundogs. Forward Ryan Steeves tallied two scores in the game.

Bartolone opened the scoring for Arizona at 10:08 of the first period on a power play goal from Dan Laperriere and Jordan Mowbray. Rio Grande matched the Sundogs on a power play goal at 13:25 of the first by Matt Reynolds from Jamie Lovell. The Killer Bees took two penalties in less than 30 seconds to give Arizona a two-man advantage. Arizona's Ryan Steeves took advantage, putting one past Rio Grande Valley netminder Jeff Van Nynatten with two minutes left in the period. Veteran defensemen Laperriere and Bartolone assisted on the play. Killer Bees defenseman Brent Cummings was called for a penalty to close out the first.

Forward Doug Orr scored just 1:12 into the second, giving Arizona its third power play goal of the game. Four minutes later, Steeves notched his second goal of the night, sliding one by Van Nynatten. At 8:12, Jordan Mowbray added another power play marker on a pass from Clement Arsenault and Doug Orr, making the score 5-1 in favor of the Sundogs.

Forward Doug Orr would close out the scoring for Arizona, notching his second goal of the night at 6:38 of the third period. Rio Grande Valley's Jonathan Robert scored a power play goal at 10:32 of the period after an Arizona penalty by Kyle Orr. With less than two minutes left in the contest, Robert scored again on a pass from Joe Casey to get the Killer Bees to within three. That's as close as they would come with the game ending in a 6-3 Arizona win.

In his first start of the season, Sundogs' netminder Kris Mayotte stopped 46 of 49 shots faced. Arizona finished 3 of 9 on the power play while Rio Grande Valley finished 2 of 8. The two teams face off again tomorrow night in Hidalgo at 7:35pm Central time.
