LOVELAND, CO – The Colorado Eagles continued to dominate their opponent Wednesday night with a 9-1 victory over the New Mexico Scorpions. The Eagles broke numerous team records including winning their eighth consecutive game, beating their opponent by eight goals, and giving up the fewest shots to an opponent (13). Brad Williamson tied a franchise mark shared by seven others with five points on a goal and four assists. Paulo Colaiacovo started his first professional game in net, and saved 12 of 13 shots in the victory. Colorado's nine goals also ties a franchise mark set on Valentine's Day 2004 in a 9-2 win over the Amarillo Gorillas. The Eagles moved three points ahead of the Wichita Thunder tonight in the battle for first place as Wichita lost to the Topeka Tarantulas, 4-3. Colorado is now 25-5-5 for 55 points and is in first place in all of the Central Hockey League.

The Eagles struck first for the seventh straight game when Riley Nelson lit the lamp for his ninth power play goal of the season and 22nd goal overall. Colorado kept the puck in their offensive end for most of the first period and it paid off with 43 seconds remaining. Karlis Zirnis passed the puck all the way through the crease to Mike Lephart who shot the puck over St. Vincent's shoulder. The Eagles took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Brad Williamson gave the Eagles a three-goal lead only 1:46 into the second period. He got a little help when St. Vincent had troubles covering up and the puck trickled in. He was assisted by Greg Pankewicz and Ryan Tobler. It was defenseman Matt Desrosiers that continued the landslide scoring the next two Eagles' goals. The first on a power play when Desrosiers rushed the net and Greg Pankewicz fed him a floater through traffic and Desrosiers did the rest. His second goal came on a blast from just inside the blue line. The Scorpions finally got on the board at the 17:06 mark of the second period when Peter Ambroziak tipped the puck past Colaiacovo on a two-on-one with Alexandre Piche. The Eagles quickly answered scoring just 1:28 later on a Greg Pankewicz slapshot. The Eagles went into the second intermission with a 6-1 lead, and were out shooting the Scorpions 32-8.

The Scorpions changed goaltenders to start the third period, but the outcome was the same as Colorado scored two goals in the first 1:45 of the period on goaltender Miguel Beaudry. Fraser Filipic picked up a loose puck and scored his second goal of the season just 32 seconds into the period, and Mike Lephart gave the Eagles an 8-1 lead on a great pass from Karlis Zirnis. The Eagles kept pounding away and Chris Hartsburg scored the franchise record tying ninth goal on a redirection of a shot from Jesse Cook. The final horn sounded and the Eagles dominated not only in the final score, but also in shots with a final tally of 53-13.

The Eagles take on another Northwest Division rival, the Wichita Thunder, on Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center, game time is at 7:05 p.m. MST. The Fort Worth Brahmas will be in town the following night, Saturday, January 22nd for another Northern Conference battle, that game is also at 7:05 p.m. MST.
